Wham bam thank you Tram
Suffocate City

Traffic flow in the Adelaide metroplolis is slowing down with the advent of the tram.
Having commuted to and through town in recent times Ive noticed the difference.
A few people who work in town have commented on traffic congestion.
My Taxi and Courier friends are not impressed.[They now avoid working in town]
Apparently the speed limit in town is 50k...if only we could get to 50k :roll:
King William street is clogging up, North Terrace is stagnating as well

A friend of mine lives with the woman who made the paper today

TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK BLAMED ON CITY TRAM

She was blocked in the North Terrace Myers carpark for an hour.
trying to get onto North Terrace + hundreds of others were trapped as well.
FALSE REPORTING she said it was 2 hours in the carpark !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :roll:
She called the police to try and get out of the carpark

I understand the tram will be of great benefit to some
But for many others perhaps not.

That is gutter-journalism at it's best- hyped up & sensationalist, without fore-thought.
Do Melbourne have these problems & blame trams? No.
Was this problem evident during the construction of the tram (which was worse on reducing traffic flow)? No.
Do Sydney have worse traffic problems than us? Yes.
Do Sydney have trams? No.
Was the traffic jam due to everyone trying to leave the city at once? Yes.

The tram extension is probably one of the most logical innovations by any sitting government in a long/my time.
Which is better, a tram that-
stops in the geographical centre of the city (yet is not the business/comercial hub)
services the university, casino, skate park & Rundle Mall- locations that people actualy desire to be in.

The sooner the tram-line is extended down Port Rd to Port Adelaide, the better- & @ no disruption to traffic- remmeber that large parcel of land designed to be a canal, which surprise surprise, never got past planning?

Also, to those complaining about travelling through town- there's a ring-route road to avoid the city!
Perhaps the answer to reduce traffic congestion (& remove Toorak tractors with lone-mum drivers on their way to gym & lunch, folowed by visits to Gucci & Prada) would be to have a toll on entering the city.
Adelaide needs to waken from it's slumber & at least enter the 19th century.
Then at least Mal & his taxi mates could negotiate the city with ease & not blame the tram.

I drove down there the last 2 days at 9.00am and no problems...being blown* out of proportion, the sooner people realise we dont have traffic problems in Adelaide the better!

Perhaps all the damn roadworks in the city, traffic light being out of sequence etc etc have more to do with this problem than the tram. Funny, I have been caught up in these bottlenecks before, well and truly before the tram hit the northern end of the City, did people complain then, No

Umm, you mean the central part of Port Rd that actually was a canal, but was filled-in in the 1960s?

So it actually got off the ground (to a degree)?
I thought the plan was to have it going into the city- near the Ent. Cent.?

too right this morning there was a massive hold up on King William St caused by.....................a bus that had broken down in the middle lane at the Hindley street lights.


Now that the trams are here Mike Rann should hurry up and announce where they are going to go next so we can get on with the next round of bitching by people with nothing better to do

Know there is some talk that they are going to extend it further north, through North Adelaide and along Prospect Road, don't know how reliable that is, be great for North and Glenelg fans, just hop on a tram when we play each other

that would be great- I also think that they will use it to service Adelaide Oval (if this plan was to go ahead).

A number of traffic problems in the city are being caused by the rebuilding of the Bakewell Bridge, when that is opened a lot of the current congestion should ease!

As for Tram extensions, I would like to see the Tram extended down Morphett Rd directly to Marion Shopping Centre, that way they can scrap the Adelaide to Marion bus and get people to and from Marion to the City in a lot faster time.

The best next step for the tram would be a continuation of the current extension to loop around and rejoin back at South terrace. A tram line extension out to the Norwood Parade and beyond would be a good step forward as well!

KW Street used to be 3 lanes before the TRAM
KW Street is now down to 2 lanes
Its inevitable that traffic flow will be impeded now and in the future.

3-45 pm
Last month I drove from the corner of KW/GRENFELL [On Grenfell st.]
Turned left into PULTENEY STREEET
Then left into NORTH TERRACE
Then left into KW STREET
Then left back to the original spot

26 Minutes later .....

I dont know why like the old days they just left it 3 lanes in both ways having the tram and traffic share a lane.
It might hold the tram up by a couple of minutes but would ensure traffic is 5 mins better off at least.
The sooner they extend it the better, I want to see concrete plans that its being extended soon otherwise its a complete waste of money.

How far from the Port end did it extend then?
There was no canal between Croydon and Woodville when I lived there in the late 1950s, and I don't remember one existing where Port Rd and Old Port Rd diverged.

Was that a canal or a drain that was filled in? The proposed canal was to be large enough to get barges from the Port to the City

The canal certainly didn't go the whole way, story was they half built it and stopped when they realised water couldn't travel uphill! :lol:
They didn't realise when the planned it that the city was elevated so much above sea level, silly duffers!

Tram is good for SA, though a tad slower than the B-line between Vic SQ and train station.
Can't wait for tram to go to Port, hopefully they can go via North Adelaide- Prospect Rd. Then can get to and fro footy to Adel Oval, Prospect and Scumbelton with much ease.

Catch the tram every day to and from work in the mornings dead quiet because on the first one that leaves the bay. In the afternoon a differnt story full due i catch when the kids leave school. Don't mind them going down King William street. Went down on the open sunday
