COCA COLA entering new market

SOFT drink maker Coca-Cola Amatil will take on South Australian favourite Farmers Union Iced Coffee in September with the launch of its own coffee-flavoured milk.

Farmer's Union Iced Coffee outsells Coke in SA by almost three to one – the only place in the world where a milk drink is more popular than a cola.

CCAmatil chief executive Terry Davis said testing of Goulburn Valley flavoured milks in WA had gone very well in the past 10 months.

SA's launch date for the milks, which include banana, strawberry, chocolate, iced coffee and mocha flavours, is set for September 18, with a national roll-out to follow.

SA region manager and former Glenelg SANFL player Peter Carey said the SA market was "very competitive – and a market that loves its flavoured milk". The company has not revealed how much market share it plans to take in SA.

Farmer's Union owner National Foods spokesman Julian Caples said iced coffee was a clear market leader here, South Australians drinking 36 million litres of it every year.

"South Australians drink 45 million litres of flavoured milk every year and we have 82 per cent of the market," he said. "We wish Coca Cola well."

His company has dominated Australian flavoured milk sales, worth $305 million last year, with a 44 per cent share of supermarket sales.

He said competing products, including Fleurieu Milk Company's new natural iced coffee, were healthy for the market.

There's coffee flavoured cows?

Seriously, testing iced coffee in WA is like testing Vic Bitter in Sth Australia. ie, it's not a true indicator of what will happen when released in SA.

I remember working for Cadbury Schweppes and them plotting the downfall of FUIC. At the moment, I'd say it's impossible, the only thing to do is try and undercut FUIC big time and see if they can get some of the market share.

i agree its almost impossible to bring down FUIC. But if you are going to enter the market for god sake, make sure you bring in a drink that is actually worth drinking.

I believe we are close to the only city in the WORLD where coca-cola isn't the biggest seller.

Good luck in trying to change that..

6 years ago after going 3 weeks without one I found them in the supermarket fridge at Hervey Bay, $3-50, didn't stop me indulging though.
Back then there were not that many oulets outside of SA that stocked it, it is a lot more readily available now.

Me thinks this could become an interesting war  Hope you guys will keep us all up to date with it...would love nothing better than to see you stick it up Coca Cola and the others for that matter.

I suspect they will ignore your generations...die hards, too stuck in your ways...much easier for them to capture the newest generations. Just watch for them finding ways to grab the kids...get them hooked on the stuff and they probably won't ever go near FUIC.

I don't drink fizzy drinks but I would doubt that Cola drinks are much better for you. If they aren't loaded with sugar then they must be full of artificial sweeteners. The, in my opinion extremely suspect label, 'fattest nation' is more likely due to consuming fizzy drinks to wash down all that wonderful fast food from those foreign franchises

Get people hooked on fast foods and you've probably got them on Cola's too. I know our fast food places don't exactly have much else to choose in the way of drink...fizzy drinks or vile tea/coffee...thats pretty much it.
