I chose HK because my last Holden was an HK 327c.in. Bathurst model Monaro, with the 4-barrel carburettors and the 25 gallon [about 112 litre] petrol tank, which you filled frequently - it was a good thing fuel was 37 cents a gallon - just over 8 cents a litre. I'd owned a second hand FJ, then an HR, then the Monaro.

There is car club in Adelaide that is called the FX to HZ club, I think I would fit in there pretty well!

Of course the VC Commodore still has the Red Motor and incarnations of it in Blue and Black can still be found up to the VK Commodore, so if I had to draw a line in the sand it would be between VK and VL! - Despite the fact that the VL was a much better car than the VK, my interest is primarally 1970's cars, so the 86 VK is about as far as I can stretch and thats only really for parts! 8)

I have a 1977 HX Kingswood that I am using for my drive to work car and have cut out now pretty much all the rust and am getting her ready for a re-spray. I also have a 1973 TC Cortina which has had some fairly major restoration work done and is not to far away from being back on the road, I am working to get the Corty ready for the All British Day in Feb, so fingers crossed it should be all good! 8)

HK for me, out of those listed.

I am hopeful that the VE becomes my favourite in a few weeks when I pick up my new one.

I was one of the people lined up to buy the Bathurst Torana that was cancelled - they were going to put the 5 litre V8 in that little Torana with the pointy nose - I don't know the model designation. After that was canned I went Japanese for two cars, then German.

My 1st car was a HR - loved to drive the car but it used to overheat quickly - one day the radiator spewed its guts up just going up a few hills to Belair National Park in Adelaide. Very embarrassing for a young lad.

One problem with the red motors is that when the radiators begin to block they dont have a lot of room to move in cooling - few older cars have a radiator working at 100% efficency because of small blockages usually from rust from cast iron heads blocking up the radiator!

Two tricks you can try that are very effective to stop it from happening - The HZ-VK series 6cyl use a Five Blade Fan as opposed to the older four blade version, the lugs are in exactly the same spot so its an easy change over for which you dont have to remove the radiator, it makes a massive amount of difference at a cost of $10 from a wreckers! The other option is to get a radiator from the wreckers that is a 6cyl but one with air conditioning, essentially they are a V8 radiator yet with the tank configuration of the 6, if its run out of water in the wreckers you will need to get it re-cored, yet they also work pretty well for adding extra cooling if you are towing a lot or doing constant courier work!
