Avert your eyes-R rated DVD cover up in SA

The religious extremists continue their draconian fight against the rest of us, movies like Mad Max, Robocop & The Terminator will now be found in the soft porn section of video stores and retailers:

Believe it or not even libraries have had to separate them and label them with a huge warning sign. Absolute bollocks.

Sorry Gozu I know this is a serious topic but: Now I have the perfect excuse next time I get sprung looking in the porn section at Blockbuster - "I was looking for Terminator, honestly I was..." ;)

So, which one of the major parties supported it?

Family First could not have done it without the support of one of the major parties

There was this at comment #63:

"The new law was supported by everyone in Parliament: Family First, Labor, Liberal, Greens, Xenophonites. No-one spoke against it. Contrary to comment 23 of 33, other States have this law, so the franchisors don't have any difficulty with it, having adapted easily in the other jurisdictions. Comment 16 of 33 "Nazi-Australia" must have grown up in blissful ignorance of history or what it is like to live under National Socialism or some other totalitarian regime.

So, Parliament is full of religious extremists if they all voted for it.

Surely all the video shops have to do is have an R Rated section and not put with the "R" porn movies? I'd do it just to stuff fish up

They kept this one pretty quiet until the legislation got through! Disgraceful.

I'm concerned about this because there is no way to draw a clear line where censorship is concerned, and a law like this is only going to make it easier for the next narrow-minded bigot to step up with a new list of things-that-should-be-banned.

I can understand the need for those devices parents can use on the internet or the video console to restrict their kids from accessing certain things. But that's the choice of the individual. This law regarding R-rated DVDs is far closer, in my opinion, to the police-state tactics of controlling the media etc. than to the relatively altruistic ideal of protecting your child from viewing unsuitable content (which is what Hood initially spruiked it as).

Just out of interest, does anyone know - was there a requirement for the video shops to put the blueys in their own separate section or did they just do it?

After all, they were only "R" as well (or so fish tells me ;) )

Yes it was a legal requirement.

I am in the industry and it is a totally ridiculous law. Covers are only allowed to be of either G or PG standard as it is. Movie called the Hanover which is R-Rated has a picture of three blokes and a baby.....hardly anyhting to be offended by.That is the norm...not the exception. Rental has suffered on theses titles since they have been moved.

totally agree with brodlach, I am also in the business and it is a joke, all it has done is to put all the R rated movies in one spot so this has now just highlighted where all the R rated movies are
we own a store and we have 3 R rated movie sections now, new release rental, weekly rental and retail
all our R rated movies are main stream movies, comedy, horror, action etc, no soft porn at all (although we did until recently, just not worth the effort anymore)
also a high number of our R rated movies are 70's and 80's actions/thrillers such as Clint Eastwood movies, Robocop, Mad Max etc and if they were reclassified today then most of them would be no more than M

I've got no idea that's just according to General Atkinson and I wouldn't ask him for his opinion on the weather. I'd find it hard to believe the Greens wouldn't at least voice some opposition to this lunacy.
