I would expect some among the denizens here may be able to volunteer to take you to a few places that are not easily accessible by public transport. I would but I expect I'll be in the UK about the time you get to Oz, and I'm currently living in Melbourne, 500miles from Adelaide.

Where abouts in the UK Psyber

Not sure yet - possibly, near Nottingham, Derby, or York. I have the option of part-time consultancy work in those areas. I have also been offered full time work in Leeds or Inverness, but I don't want to work full time.

Maybe you could do a house swap with JAS. I think she is from the Inverness area. If you go to York, make sure you go in the summer as it regularly floods in the winter these days. Queens Hotel is a good place to stay, right in the town centre and right on the river, and theres a great authentic Turkish restaraunt just round the cornere on George St.

We intend to be in the UK for a year or two, so we are looking at the rental market. We'll take your tip about York on board! Generally I note a lot of the UK is low lying so we'll make sure we are uphill and perhaps acquire a dinghy.

We may get a place on higher ground a little out of the main cities, and buy a good second hand Golf diesel or something similar while there.

Yeh I'm about 60 miles (I think...don't drive but takes about an hour by car on a very bad road) from Inverness but I think Psyber might have his sights set a little higher than a one bedroomed shoebox next to a runway used by jetfighters

York really is lovely...even if it is the new Venice of the North...don't know about the Queens Hotel though but most of them are right on the river at some point during the year

Come to think of it, I don't know why I am recommending the Queens. I was in the lounge watching England on TV the night they lost to Croatia :(

Psyber, most of England is above sea level. South East and East coast, Suffolk / Norfolk are a bit vulnerable but the further North you go, the higher above sealevel you get. And it's beeter scenery, walking, hospitality, football, beer, food, you name it.

That would be soccer to you   Even though I was Suffolk born and bred I wouldn't want to move back down South again...JTC is spot on, even though there are still places I'd avoid, everything is better further north.

If the met office is correct (hopefully exaggerating or my sea view might get a bit closer) we should find out on Monday which bits of coast are prone to flooding 8-[

Most of the inland flooding here is a few hundred metres either side of a short stretch of some rivers...whilst obviously devastating for the homeowners it's not exactly of Bangladesh proportions. Oh and if our amazingly accurate press are anything to go by you might need to bring your own food...apparently we're going to run out but don't worry too much cos the bird flu will probably get you first or the gun toting 13 year olds

I actually played Soccer for one season [as Goalie] at secondary school. They were short of a Goalie and thought acquiring a Hockey player was not too big a step, and I'll have a go at anything once [almost]. It's not a game I get much out of watching though. [Then, Hockey is a better game to play than watch too.]

If my wife gets her way we'll finish up living up on the Yorkshire moors or higher parts of Derbyshire. While the $AU is high and UK property is down we may even consider buying something after we have had a look around - we've been looking on the Internet - her at houses and me at car prices. [My wife says Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear could be my long lost brother!]

sorry - not banned. Coles had em here for about 2 weeks. We bought their entire stock at the local store. When we asked when they were getting new stock, we were told "no demand". Bloody queenslanders - no taste

Probably worried about milk used coming from confused cows during daylight savings, it could fade their curtains.

UK property is down in terms of prices not rising much Psyber, but don't let that fool you. I live on the Lancashire / Yorkshire border in an old farmhouse. The property prices around here are crazy, as they are pretty much everywhere in the UK. A small 2 up 2 down terraced house with no garden in any town will cost you at least $100k. The same house in a nice arae will be upwards $240k and in London, just forget it. In the village a small terraced house went for $400k and if you want something with a garden and detached, around here expect to pay at least $500k. My neighbour, who bought one of the barns that belonged to the farm, paid $600k 3 years ago and now it's worth about $700k and if you want to buy my place make me an offer in the region of $1.1m

The housing market downturn in the UK is relative only to the UK. If that isn't too Irish.

Ah...you might want to take some food money with you to the airport  From what I've heard the 'eye' is going to be over me so hopefully no gales but the super low pressure means possible monster tides  but that would mean you get the gales...fingers crossed they got it wrong and you get away on time :?
