Oh no people have become emotional at seeing hundreds of homes and livelihoods being destroyed as well as all the people that have died because of the fires. I am sorry but if you haven't in some way had your emotions 'get to you' after hearing or seeing what these fires have done then you have a problem IMHO. That is the worst post i have ever seen on this site.

I'm guessing that the large majority of people who start fires have mental health issues however the genius that started the fire by throwing a cigarette butt out of his car window deserves to be strung up.

Agree. It's just a total disdain for everyone else.

Chick came into work (moved here from Victoria a few weeks back) telling me the family home is gone and a couple of friends are missing.

Being such a small population in Aus, there's always going to be at least a couple of degrees of separation when this shit goes down.

It never ceases to amaze me how certain people will not pollute their beloved automobiles by putting a durry butt in the ash tray - yet have no qualms about filling their lungs with the sh!t in the first place, or indeed doing so from the front seat of said automobile.

Skipper46, I think you need to think a little more when typing, very misleading post especially being that even the PM has labled it mass murder, act of terrorism.

131 confirmed people. I really feel for this bloke who lost everything wife, kids, animals, property, everything!! I hope his family have photos for him and alot of love as I think he will be going through the unimaginable.

No-one (arsonist) will ever stand trial for murder in this situation..

"Manslaughter" is all they can be charged with.

No jail term neccessary...

Only rehabilitation...

When the Victorian Police commisioner and the PM state this person/ these people will be charged with Murder I think the person will be in serious trouble. Have an opinion but time it correctly, skippers post was arrogant at best.

Not that Im using this as a reason, because it should never happen anyway (throwing lit cigarettes out the window), but should new cars revert back to including ashtrays?

Well Dog_ger forgive me for having a passionate opinion. waking up Sunday hearing the fires from the previous night and the location (My oldest sister and soon to be nephew live in the vicinity) I was truely nervous. After not being able to get in contact with her for approx 7 hours it was truely a releif when she answered her phone. Thankfully they and their property are ok, I was just about to drive over with my old man before we found out. I'm normally a positive person and I never assumed the worst, but it's not a nice thought having that doubt in your mind let me tell you. Just the timing is shit house and to be completely honest, uncalled for.

I am very compationate to all affected but my POINT was this sort of thing (major catastrophe) happens every 25 years and there is not a lot we can do about it when conditions are so bad. be compationate but dont let your emotions control you, sit back and think about it.

I daresay lack of education of such matters?
& before you scoff, let us remember our own horror, Ash Wednesday, 1983.
People were on the front foot, with regards to risk-minimsation, with regard to bushfires.
25 years on, the people who lived Ash Wednesday have moved on, replaced by people ignorant to the threat (in the Hills).
These people are less vigilant than the previous generation, & perhaps this tragedy will serve as a reminder that they must remain eternally vigilant.

*edit- my post was a reply to Hondo_71's, which has disappeared

I work in the Rialto and had a good view of the fires.
It may be another week before all of these are under control
