I heard that the 'used by' meant it HAS to be used by then, and the 'best before' date is still fine a few days after.

I 'think' thats correct!

Isnt that how places like RitePrice and IGA get away with selling food super cheap after its 'best before' date?

My understanding is that "use by" dates are pretty conservative and driven to some extent by ensuring there is a minimal risk of being sued.
There is also the advantage of encouraging people to chuck and replace as early as possible and believable.
Many items, if not opened, will keep well beyond the dates, but you do need to do the sniff test...

The Automobile Chamber of Commerce every so often has a shot at establishing a "use by" date for cars by seeking permission to stop supplying spare parts after 5 years, linked with "stringent safety checks" imposed by governments. I'm surprised GMH couldn't get Mike Rann to do it after some "consideration" . ;)

Do you have any links or anything where I can read about the car thing. Seems very interesting.

No I don't have any links.
They seem to have gone quiet on the whole thing in recent years.
I haven't seen it being advocated since I came back from Melbourne in 2009.
In Adelaide prior to 1998, throughout the 80s and 90s in fact, someone from the Automobile Chamber of Commerce was often popping up on the TV news advocating this position, on the basis that it was what they did on Japan and it keep the motor industry alive there (it did for a while).

Pop down to the wheatsheaf - there are often a few decent real life ones there - just have to work your way thru the disapointments unfortunately.

This is the thing I don't get about use by dates.

The stamp on the milk says April 22 (for examples sake)

the milk doesn't know what day it is, so how would it know to go off on that exact day?

Noticed a while ago that Coopers' Ale has a best after date stamped on it.

Why would you waste time trying to pick up a lesbian :? If you are desperate to score your best bet would be middle aged ugly chicks. You'll pull more roots at the Arkaba than the Wheatsheaf unless of course you are a lesbian.

Target @ Sefton Plaza.
A few weeks ago we were going to the beach and my daughter needed bathers, I bought some that had $16 on the tag and were $5.92 when we got to the checkout.
Last week, I got some things for my pushie, they totalled $16, came to $9 at the checkout.
Yesterday, a wallet, $16 on the rack, $6.93 at the checkout.

They'd make far more sales if they displayed what they were actually selling them for.

I'll take the win though, just meant I had an extra couple of beers at the local after my shopping.
