Christ lets ban, cars, alcohol, junk food, electromagnetic radiation (some links to cancer), and any physical activity that exposes its participants to ultra-violet rays....

I hate smoking and detest it, but everytime the booze and cigarette excise goes up I think of the people at least one standard deviation below the mean in socio-economic status who are disproportionately represented in our population as drug users, alcoholics, obese and smokers those that can least afford it are being asked to pay more.

Yes I know that some of that excise will go to their health care later on but for some of them they just can't quit because a lifetime of addiction to a drug that when they started the habit was socially acceptable neigh even cool, and despite several attempts their reliance on that drug makes them unable to quit.

Christ do we make it an immigration question - with the tobacco companies increasing their marketing to 3rd world countries. Some poor bastard is getting politically persecuted and meets our refugee status and on entry into the country we say sorry you can't come in because you smoke??

I support all atempts and encourage people to give it up but despite societies best efforts some people are just unable to quit an addiction.

I have pesonal experience watching someone try and try repeatedly to give them up even when presented with the strongest motivation but has been unable to do so because of the addictive nature of that drug.

Prohibtion and punitive actions don't work education does.....Especially when punitive actions are most likely going to effect those that don't have the resources or the intelectual forsight to deal with those actions...

There is NO EXCUSE for smoking. None. Zero. Zilch. You can throw every single stat you like to try and prove your point. The fact is that these people MUST stop smoking just as much as anyone else should. Even the Aborigines. Smoking does not relieve stress - contrary to the opinions of those in this area. It kills.Whether or not your stats are correct is irrelevant.

(Yes I know, Wedgie! 22!)

Don't know about the must, but no one on this whole thread is denying that smoking is a bad thing, no one.
That's what you keep coming back to.

As I stated before, we'll get to the why & hows in the near future. The wrinkly avatared post above this one is generally getting through to the gist of things, but for now..........please..........

Do the improvished have a higher rate of smoking in it's ranks than the middle class & well to do ?

Who did you'' rip to shreds'' some 12yo?

If your gunna strut around acting the tough guy Phil, have the intestinals to at least put on an argument with an adult. You failed the first time so either play the game or quietly fade away sport.

It shouldnt take 7 pages of posts to realise that smokers are blatantly killing themselves voluntarily. End of thread.

No I'm not, that's where your getting me wrong, not at all. Absolutely nothing at all to with any excuse as to why people smoke.

http://www1.worldbank.org/tobacco/book/ ... apter1.htm
Today, in most high-income countries, there are significant differences in the prevalence of smoking between different socioeconomic groups. In the United Kingdom, for instance, only 10 percent of women and 12 percent of men in the highest socioeconomic group are smokers; in the lowest socioeconomic groups the corresponding figures are threefold greater: 35 percent and 40 percent. The same inverse relationship is found between education levels-a marker for socioeconomic status-and smoking. In general, individuals who have received little or no education are more likely to smoke than those who are more educated

So we'll take the above snippet as a gimme then ok? Reckon with the other couple of sites provided earlier the fact that the have nots choff durries at a rate much higher than those who play polo on a regular basis.

So, after all that, here's a scenario, one you can get your teeth into Phil, & nothing to do about why people smoke.

The federal election was held last week. Howard got in by the skin of his sphincter, but the watermelons had a big result with 10 upper house seats. PhilG wins one of the Victorian seats. Bob Brown & his husband though have stepped down to raise a large family of Somalian crippled muslims in a mud igloo on the banks of the Franklin.
PhilG has been elected leader of the party, on the basis that he was the only one on that day not attending the Age of Aquarius festival in Nimben.
Howard has to get his budget through, but with a minority in the senate must strike a deal with The Greens.
Phil has the chance to at last draft up his new tobacco smoking legislation.
These laws come into affect today, right now.

The floor is yours Senator, fire away.

perhaps smokers could be a bit more responsible (less selfish), when indulging in their "god given right"???

Well if I walked 1/2 km down Hanson Road.........

I have counted numerous people flicking ash from cars whilst smoking.
I have seen drivers throw the cigarette butts out of cars.
They fine drivers for talking on a mobile phone whilst driving, and yet
people drive one handed whilst having a puff.
AND THEN THERES THE BUSHFIRES...........
Smoking does affect a lot of non smokers.

Not meaning for this to form part of the smoking debate, as I've always been bemused by the inconsistencies of what can or can't be done while driving, but smoking (whilst driving) is surely no worse than eating or drinking whilst driving?

Postby whatcha got there? » Tue Feb 20, 2007 2:29 pm

as probably one of the youngest posters on this forum, i thought id open my fat yapper and have a say in this. hopefully i dont get shot down like everyone else has.

has anyone cared to read the trash magazines lately? such a NW and Famous etc? almost all photos of female celebrities, such as lindsay lohan, britney spears, sienna miller (just to name a few), show them smoking.

teenage girls THRIVE on what celebrities do.
anything they do, is automatically considered cool and "socially acceptable", so i think half the problem here is that magazines like the ones i mentioned above. they need to stop printing pictures showing celebs smoking, and that will at least diminish the amount of next-generation smokers.

all that aside, i myself am a smoker, and am currently trying to quit. i think non-smokers that rag on those trying to quit are highly inconsiderate, as it isnt easy.
