From the Diet Coke Wikipedia page

Diet Coke does not utilize a modified form of the Coca-Cola recipe but is instead an entirely different formula. The controversial New Coke, introduced in 1985, used a version of the Diet Coke recipe that contained high fructose corn syrup and had a slightly different balance of ingredients. In 2004 Coca-Cola introduced Coca-Cola C2, which it claims tastes much closer to Coca-Cola but contains half the carbohydrates. In 2006, The Coca-Cola Co. introduced Coca-Cola Zero, a sugar-free variation of regular Coca-Cola.

Yes I tried it - if it were artificial sweetener free as well as sugar free I think it might be a good drink. I find the popular stuff is all far to sweet for me, and of the "sweets" I find real sugar the most acceptable. Zero tasted far too sickly sweet for me.

Reminds me of the Duff Beer factory where all the different brands of beer eventually lead to the same pipe!

For anyone who may have worked night shift a few years back and may have listened to Graham Guy's overnight show on 5AA, there was a woman who use to ring on a semi-regular basis with information about aspartame.
Do think that you probably have to have at least a couple of cans a day for you to have any long term effects from it.
Do know that the US Air Force has had a ban in place since 1985 for their pilots not to eat or drink products that have aspartame in them.
Aspartame/951 is also in nearly all other diet soft drinks, diet yoghurts, some protein bars as well as just about anything else that's labeled "diet".
