I opened the door, and screamed "AAARRRGGGHHH!, witches, burn, burn in hell children of satan"
Slammed the door.

I hope i never see them again.
It is likely.

One i have planned is to act reall creepy and go "yes, yes, you can have some candy, it's in my bedroom, COME IN AND GET IT...."

I really, really hate Halloween.
(Although i loved the movie E.T.)

I don't think the Churches could disagree with Punk's assessment of the origins of Christianity. Paganism has both European and Middle Eastern origins so far as I know, but the subject is very deep so I couldn't say for sure.
I do know that some Greek Gods were adopted from the Middle East, and given different names to suit the local language. The Romans then adopted the Greek Gods and did the same thing, eg. Zeus became Jupiter, Poseidon became Neptune etc.
So far as Paganism goes, every culture had their little Pantheon of Gods, I think some anthropologists have claimed that they are all intertwined somehow, but I'm not sure on that.
The Irish have an origin myth that says they once lived in Egypt, and were sort of allies to the Jews, for one reason or another they were banished and travelled around North Africa and the Middle East, eventually wandering around the rim of the Mediterranean until they came to settle in Spain, from there they migrated to Ireland and then there are many bloody stories about various wars fought on behalf of families against the original inhabitants of Ireland. Interestingly, DNA studies have confirmed that the Irish did indeed follow that route around the Mediterranean from the Middle East, and they did in fact stop in Spain before migrating to the islands (anyone who is interested read "Blood of the Isles" by Bryan Sykes). They would have brought some pagan beliefs with them.
Halloween being a harvest festival would suggest that it came about after the advent of agriculture, which was introduced to Ireland after the majority of today's Irish stock arrived. I would hazard a guess to say that Halloween would then qualify as having entirey Irish origins: Irish people, already in Ireland, creating a new belief to account for new circumstances. Whether that festival was also introduced by the same folk that introduced the farming is beyond what I have read about.

By your earlier post it looks as though it is the origin rather than the occassion that you want to remind people of.

Yes, but one involves getting hammered from early hours of the day and the other involves buying strange kids lollies and answering the door all night.

I agree with punky!

Halloween = evil American cultural imperialism and should be supressed. [Even if its roots are Irish.]

Sure retailers want to promote it and do. Those who adopt it in the US style should be given short shrift. I was ready to say, "Sorry, this isn't America." but we are in a civilised un-American neighbourhood and nobody knocked.

It is a socio-cultural thing - the further east you live in Oz, and the lower your socio-economic orientation the more likely you are to like US cars and styles. Hence the Labo[u]r Party.

Me? I install UK English in all programmes on my computers, drive smaller engined higher performing European cars, and point out to the The Age that the term they use "Pedophile" means the offender's interest is in feet. [Pes Pedis - Latin for foot, as distinct from Paed.. greek for child.]

It amazes and amuses me anyone could find anything to like in American "style". And I am going to Britain and Europe next year carefully avoiding the USA. 8)
