This topic could be a serious problem.
As a boaty I’m disgusted with the number of plastic bags floating around the gulf, the damage they cause to marine life is well documented. However, I sat on the fence over this issue because of how handy these bags were for re-use. As others have mentioned they made free bin liners, were perfect for pet droppings at home or ‘walkies’, you could stockpile leftover bags for recycling. Best of all you could unload cheap bottles of gift wine by taking them to friends (with no taste in wine), who thought you had just been to a bottle shop. :))
What really concerns me about the ‘material’ re-usable bags is their potential for spreading illness & disease as they circulate around & around through unsanitary storage, dirty hands, homes, cars, trolleys, check-outs & shop staff, taxis, public toilets & public transport etc., etc.
Could they replace rats as carriers of the next ‘black plague?’ :-o
At least plastic bags were clean for their one use food contact.
*-:)
Enough gloom & doom. I’ve discovered the answer quite by accident. My local supermarket asked me to PAY for plastic shopping bags the other day, but as it was Xmas & I’m far too much of a ‘Scrooge’, $-) I said “No way, just shove it back loose in the trolley!”
Do you know how much fun can be had by arranging your bagless shopping on the floor of your boot so it fits perfectly & doesn’t roll around. Just think of it as great practice for playing a giant game of ‘tetris’.
CAUTION: When shopping with the kids this game can get expensive. We now find ourselves buying weird shaped crap we don’t need or want, just to fill those crazy spots in the boot.
But before we all go ‘bagless’ for good family fun & good world health……

Has anyone thought about the poor old ‘Bag Ladies?’ :-?

And it is all a furphy - there are several makers of biodgradable plastic bags which the shops claim are "too expensive", but if used they would soon cost no more than the non-biodegradable ones.
In the meantime there is profit selling us these re-usable bags usually made of really non-biodegradable polypropylene.

Was handed my Subway the other day in a Paper Bag! - Considering the water - bleach - biocide etc used to make Paper Bags, I fail to see how this helps the environment!

Good idea by Foodland in their weekly catalogues stating "Dont bag us". As usual it is the "frontline" people that cop the abuse...what does some young afterschool kid packing my shopping have to do with the legislation??

Some of the responses on Adealaide Now make you shake your head at their pig headedness
