all codes have a heat policy in place

the RSPCA are just as useful as the ACCC and fuel prices

I truly sympathise for those working in the sun or in oppressive conditions this week. I'm sure there are many, many people who are worse off than me. But I can't think of much worse than being trapped in a crusty 70s DMAC with 30 sweaty pre-pubescent Year 7s with a broken air con. Walking into the room is like being hit with a wet, filthy sock that's been soaking in toilet water. Poor blighters (and their teachers) haven't been outside for recess, lunch or fitness yet.

I know what you're saying Zip Zap.

My kids have said in their school, the air-conditioners hardly work.
To top that off, they are so loud than when the teachers need to speak,
they have to turn the air-conditioner off :(

I'm always amazed at the waste of money involved in places putting in air conditioning that doesn't actually work - under-powered, or inadequate return vents in ducted systems, or thermostats that allow +/- 4 degrees fluctuations - a few dollars saved renders the whole thing a complete waste of money. I suspect the installers make the economies to keep their quotes low and the buyers don't know what compromises have been made until it is too late.

I work in the area of air diffusion, basically we help design systems for consultants to specify and then mechanical contractors to erect and I can tell you that what we often design is usually cut in half or there abouts ( Im talking the size and capacity of the Air handling units ) as it all comes back to one thing. $$$$$. The building we occupy was not designed by us,therefore we have a sub standard and barely adequate split system ( swampy ) in our office space. As the office is relatively small and there are only two of us in here giving off heat we still have alot of printers, computers, faxes and so on. Much of these office essentials are not in the calculations people use to design systems for certain work areas.Hopefully with more education the industry will be better served to install more efficient and appropriate systems in the future.

How many of you who work in offices think the air con in there in inadequate? Do any of you work in a high rise ?

I know the old ETSA building on Anzac Hwy is a notorious " sick building " as the air managment in there is way below what it should be.Thats why companies move in and back out of there as staff constantly find themselves ill and productivity falls. That building was always doomed.

On the outside workers I truly feel for them, but, what about people in warehouses? They may not be at the mercy of the sun but the conditions in our warehouse yesterday were oppresive. 42c in the coolest spot.

I think 38 you can choose to go home, without pay.40 you must go home with pay.

Wonder what the unions would think of that?

Well if this is what the 'experts' say we are in for from now on (The long/high heat conditions)
It might have to be something they have to start to consider/figure in :-k

I work on the top floor, all floors up to the 2nd top floor are protected from direct sun light from the building next door therefore the A/C is based on those floors, hence the sun smashes in on my window and the office is stinking hot, a girl who works 12m from me but in the middle of the office had her heater going under her desk

Its an older building and Im guessing these days the A/C can be done much better in new buildings

getting back to my "joke" at the beginning of this thread, many times we have looked out the window on a beautiful spring day and wished we had a outside job....swings and roundabouts

When I worked for Forestry SA we would all have to return to base after temperatures reached 35 (nothing like being on a chainsaw in the heat with a pair of chaps on  ). Besides safety for the individual it also meant we were immediately on standby in case of fire.

I once worked in a factory and it was so hot the machines kept seizing up, they came up with a great idea to take the industrial fans away from the workers and point them towards the motors on the machines, worked a treat, nice guys.

Back in the days when I did my apprenticeship we were permitted to start early on hot days in order to go home early which seemed to work out ok.

The issue is though, currently ETSA have 40+ transformers out and people are ringing 5AA and getting quite angry over their power being off, so what happens when the linesmen decide its to hot and down tools and go home?

What I would hope is that factories slow down their production lines and supply water or cokes to their employees and try to provide as much cooling equipment as possible, its hardly in thier interest to have people failing from heat stress and then be paying out work cover bills as a result!

Try working in a kitchen with two deepfryers on two ovens on a salamander a flat grill and a
1x1 metre char grill roaring all day and night

Luckily, I can choose where I work most days. I have an air-conditioned office in town - where it is very cold, an "air-conditioned" office in the 'burbs - where it is quite warm, the air con is only switched on when I get there so has no chance and I can work at home (which I am doing right now) and we have great air-con, double brick walls and no sun on the side/front of the house after about 10am so it never heats up too much at all.

I spend some time outdoors as well, but have free reign to cancel a lot of what we do as it involves working with kids running around outside. Everything for this week has long been cancelled, I just have to pop out to see a few people here and there.

Driving past ETSA crews, road working crews, builders and other outdoor workers I really do feel for them and hope their employers apply a common sense approach - some people are too stupid to decide for themselves and just keep working even under extreme conditions.

My brother is a builder and hasn't worked past 10am yet this week.
