You need something like the Nurburgring where they can go and race each other to their hearts content and the only people they're likely to injure/kill is themselves or others like them. Then, because there is an alternative option, the penalty can be increased if they get caught doing it on public roads so they get a few years in prison and the car gets put in a crusher.

I grew up and first drove a car in the era (1970s) when drink driving was accepted, no one drove around town at 60 most people were doing 70 or more. There were a lot less cars on the road I used to be able to drive from Nailsworth to Flinders Uni (17 km) in peak hour in under 30mins. Cars were primitive, probably only 5-10% could do 160kmh flat out. I had a HK Kingswood with the 186 engine it could do about 145 kmh flat out with much vibration! and encouraged restraint. I seemed to be going to a fair number of funerals in that time I went to a small country school, out of my year 7 there were 6 blokes I am the only who survived all others dead in vehicle accident. A couple of the girls were dead as well courtesy of their idiot boyfriends. I was no saint many a time I drove home and literally couldn't walk from the car to the house because I was so pissed. Not at all proud of that al all. I was very lucky, and am a very conservative defensive driver today. I think if some of my mates from that era who were constantly being booked by the cops had their cars crushed, they might have lived a bit younger. I'm in favour of crushing cars for hoon behaviour or exceeding the speed limit by 40kmh. It might save a few lives. Introduction of compulsory 3rd party property insurance would force many younger people to drive less powerful cars because of cost. When I was living in Germany in the 80s I was contemplated buying a 4 year old Porsche 911 what put me off was the compulsory 3rd party premium was equal to 50% value of the car! I was 25 at the time. I ended up getting a VW Golf (less expensive insurance) it was just too expensive to go for the 911.

ZERO TOLERANCE people
HOON drivers
Drunk Drivers
ETC ETC

Because i am sure as god makes little green apples .give them a mini or a v8 they sure as hell will find a way to make it drive faster.

Totally agree with you there Mickyj,

Naturally they cant legislate for every level of stupidity, yet what people need to get into their heads is that it is a "privilidge" to hold a drivers license, not a "right".

I dont have a problem with seeing second time hoon offenders or second time drink / drug drivers having their cars taken away from them and sold at auction to raise money for victims of crime, for the problem to be taken seriously there needs to be a strong response to it and that is what we do not have at the current time.

I agree in priciple, mick, although I think there is a big difference between doing 100+ in a 60 zone or 120+ in an 80 zone in heavily populated areas, and doing 150+ on an empty country road marked 110.
Then I'm biased - there was no limit outside built up areas in SA when I got my licence in the 1960s.
I've always thought third party property cover should be compulsory as well as the third party person cover.

Im a young driver and I agree with alot of what people have to say about this matter.
Not condoning what people my age do, but lets be realistic here
crushing a car, that in some cases is worth 20k is not fair to the kid who has spent his whole youth saving for it.
There should be some sort of law that doesnt allow people on P's to drive v8;s or turbo'd cars!
having insurance should be compulsory for everyone on the roads!
I pay $130 a month for a non turbo non v8 car, simply because it has rims and a body kit and when I had my first car which was a crappy old 4cyl it had barely an exhaust and i was fined by police for excesive noise!

we have to e a little harsher but I think crushing cars is a little extreme!

How so ? Say those cars on weekend missed the Stobie Pole, they would've ended up in the Retirement village, and god knows how much more carnage would've been created. A car is a lethal weapon when driven incorrectly. We have speed limits for a safety reasons. If people choose to flout those limits with a complete disregard to their own and other people's safety, then they are in possession of a lethal weapon. Take those weapons away and they can't commit a crime.

Doesn't matter if they drive a Turbo or a V8. A car is a car, and put it in the hands of idiots and they'll speed whether it's got 4 cylinders or 8.

Are there underlying issues here? It's all well and good to say people are idiots and be reactionary about it it, but can there be something done about prevailing careless attitudes among young drivers? Are we seeing a disenchantment from society, aggravation toward our constructs?

Nope, what we're seeing is a complete disregard for their safety and our own, as they know if they get away with it nothing will happen.

If we established a way in which these people got caught and they had to for example, lose their licence for a determined period as well as lose their cars either for a determined period or forever and do community work with people who have been disabled through car accidents then perhaps it'll open their eye's.

My Dad was a copper back in the 70's and he said the same thing as he does today, there will always be idiots around...

That's the hard part i guess. Just a general comment but the almost complete destruction of the family unit in sections of society has been a god awful disaster for society. That is staring everyone in the face but few people say it because you might upset someone.

Having said that the problems of hoon driving no doubt spring from a few evils. It doesn't help when a soon to be released movie will glamourise this sort of behaviour.

I know that when I watch an action movie it doesn't compel me to go and drive my car fast. What a ridiculous statement!

Not a bad idea!
You'd also need a permanent ambulance and full time mortuary assistant because speed camera fines are not worth 'two bob' if the driver is dead and his passengers are maimed for life!
