Dutch sailor girl put under care

A Dutch court has put a 13-year-old girl under state care for two months, stalling her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The decision by three Utrecht judges means Laura Dekker's parents, who support her plans, temporarily lose the right to make decisions about her.

A child psychologist will now assess her capacity to undertake the voyage.

Miss Dekker says she is happy with the ruling, but she will try to convince the authorities to let her set sail.

"I haven't had the same upbringing as so many other children," she told the Dutch television programme, NOS Jeugdjournaal, in her only comments after the ruling.

"Sailing has always played an important role in my upbringing and that's why I want to do this now," she added.

While I wish Jessica all the luck in the world I do reckon minimum age limits should be put on feats like this. It's only a matter of time before a child dies trying to break 'the youngest...' record for something.

No worries...just when you mentioned the age it reminded me of this one...guess it's a more popular record than I thought :?

IMHO both of them would be far too young but I hope your authorities don't go to quite the same extremes to stop him.

I'm inclined to let them do it so long as they, or their parents, undertake to pay all rescue costs, and put up a bond or prove they are insured for it..

The end.

Definitely a book/movie deal there.

I personally think it's ridiculous by the way - and as someone else said, sick of hearing about it. WTF cares? We had a right giggle when she had the "mishap" with the ship and now she's off again?

The story of someone as young as 16 sailing solo around the world is amazing and brings interesting debate.

All that aside the kid is out there and every day I read her blogs and map her location.

Have a look at her site and wonder of the experiences she has had and will face in the coming weeks.

Looks like this one might have done a runner at the weekend...although her boat is still accounted for. I think they said on the news that she's taken about 3000 Euro's with her, hope she doesn't do anything stupid...

From the official site: http://www.jessicawatson.com.au/

Jessica Rides Out Perfect Storm and Knockdowns
23-Jan-2010

Jessica Watson has faced her toughest test to date on her solo circumnavigation, having experienced a violent storm overnight with hurricane-force wind gusts of up to 70 knots and a swell of 7-10 metres, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Jessica also experienced her first knockdown and then had to endure three more during the eight hour storm. A ‘knockdown’ is when the mast goes below horizontal and into the sea. In Jessica’s case, she was hit by a series of rogue waves.

During the storm, Jessica sailed past the 11,000 nautical mile mark. She was belted in to her wet-seat throughout.

Despite the horrific conditions and some minor damage, the good news is that both Jessica and Ella’s Pink Lady have fared well.

“We certainly copped a pounding out here, but we came through it all OK. It’s time like this when you realise why good preparation of the boat is so important. She handled it well,” said Jessica.

The winds have now abated and the dolphins have returned. She is sailing along in more pleasant conditions with a 10 knot breeze and a 3 metre swell. Jessica is now cleaning up all the mess topside and is about to catch up on some sleep.

Jessica managed to capture some images of the rising sea just before the storm struck.
Jessica will provide a more detailed update on her blog soon.

The Ocean once told me that when the going gets tough, the tough get going.....
