The car will be viewed by history as the second folly of the 20th Century (the first being George W Bush ;) ). The only reason the above statement is true is because we live in a car dependent society. In the future, long after I'm dust there will be mass transit systems that will reduce the need to drive a car and there will be more people, but less cars.

A car to every household will become an anachronism. First they take away your cigarettes, then your booze, then your car.

That's probably why the National Broadband Network is on the agenda.
They'll save a fortune once the car is banned, and working from home on line helps make roads and public transport both redundant.
People not being able to get about will save on police force costs too.

Anyone who thinks cars use will drop away and/or get replaced by public transport systems is simply kidding themselves.
Public transport has its place, but it really only used if there is no practical alternative.
Most people don't enjoy waiting for transport to turn up, then having to travel confined with noisy, smelly, disease carrying people that are the general public!

Anyway cars will survive and evolve, powered by alternative fuels.
They are a form a personal freedom and most people aren't going to put up with politicans who take that away.

The majority of drivers at 16 are fine.

It's the older drivers who drive slow and are too hesitant.
You can't say that about me - I'm already 5 points down since January 2008 for not doing that - two speedings and one not hesitating for a light as it turned red... ;)
[The latter wasn't intentional - the light changed as I was recovering from avoiding the kid who changed lane in front of me without indicating.]

The only fckwits I see on the road are generally under 30 and often on Ps in imported rice burners. Saw a guy in a Nissan tailgate 1 cars length from the car at 100kmh on Main North Road between Smithfield and Gawler unbelieveably stupid. The usual suspect Ps and a riceburner. Banning riceburners for young drivers isn't a bad idea.

I would have thought World War 1 1914 -1918 then when it started up again as WW2 1939-1945 Hitler Stalin and Mussolini .would all come Second then George W Bush ;) REB
But its just what I think ;)
Somewhere in there should be the big fuel companies/car companies squashing alternative fuelled vehicles.

Great.

Make the age to learn to drive a car 21.... :D

Our children of today are far too immature to handle a powerful vehicle.

I was an idiot at 16.

I am ashamed of the things I got away with.

There are far more many cars on the roads these days.

Thats the problem. :D

I was not an idiot at 16, and I still do not know how to do any of this stuff in a car.
I do, however, look back at this age when I was driving normally (much of it around the Hills) and within the speed limits and road laws and realise now how I wasn't always in full control of the car, or fully aware of what was going on, and how a split second change in conditions and I wouldn't have been able to react appropriately.

A $999 202 HX Kingswood can quite easily smoke the rear tyres, and sit on 160ks without to many problems, add a few bits like a 350 Holley and Genies and it goes even further without much expense. My point being that many 4 & 6 cyl cars are just as capable of causing the same problems.

In one sense I agree with what they are trying to do, yet feel that it should have been done a number of years ago and now its trying to shut the gate once the horse has well and truly bolted.

In relation to the speeding offences, most people that do it never think a tragedy will ever happen to them and that they are invincible, this is where the real problem lies in turning around that culture.

Perhaps it is a step in the right direction, yet much more needs to be done. My memory is that when they released the Phase 3 GTHO, in order to own one in some states of Australia you were required to have a CAMS motorsport license. My thoughts are that for a number of high peformance cars sold to anyone of any age, that this category of license should be an option to consider.

Why do you think it takes so long to wait for a bus or train? Because we live in a car dependent society. If you had to wait five minutes every time you wouldn't mind so much. As for noisy, smelly, disease carrying people - have a shower from time to time and STFU! ;)

Im 22 and only got my Ps in February...i drive a 2003 fairmont, which isnt on the list but can go pretty fast. If i hit something at 100kms an hour im in trouble, but if i hit a pole in a smaller car at the same speed im well and truely ******...

People are still gonna speed, tailgate, do burnouts, etc...but this is pretty much putting the most at risk drivers in the least safe cars....i predict the roal toll to increase from this...

Whilst it's not the complete answer to stopping road trauma, keeping young drivers out of fast cars is a good start.

You read a lot of correspondence to newspapers and car magazines and hear people like Mark Skaife suggesting the problem is not speed but a lack of skill in drivers.
Their argument seems to be that if you do an advanced driver course and improve your skills then it's OK to speed on our roads. This is wrong.

It doesn't matter how good a driver you are (or think you are) you put yourself and other road users at risk when you flout the speed limits.

You wouldn't get a much more skilled driver than Peter Brock but speed even got the better of him when he lost control of his car and met his sad death in that race on a WA country road 4 years ago.

Yes but all cars nowadays are able to do 160 k/hr anyway. If someone wants to speed, or be an idiot, it doesnt matter what car they have, they will do what they want.

The cars on that list would be a lot safer IF they crashed than an older or smaller car.

And also, if you look at the people that are doing the wrong thing, they are usually driving something not on the list. VN and VL commodore drivers try to drag me all the time...and then i have to beat them to show them their cars a piece of shit... ;)
