catch22 isnt it :D , my thoughts are that it doesnt help you or them to give them a free ride, i know of some people charging their kids and banking it for them and returning it when the child turns 21

I like the way they go missing for a day or two after pay day and think you might forget.

When the time comes there's no way my kids are gonna sponge off me while they save for a house. They can do their own hard yards thankyou!

i think kids should pay board... to a point. soon as they start working and obviously pending how much they get paid. they should hand a % over to teach them responsibility and to help out the house hold, i.e bils, food etc etc...

A Mum wrote:When our son started his apprenticeship he paid us $30 a fortnight - and there after every 12 months we added $10.
By the time he left home he was paying $50 or $60 a fortnight.

As my brother pointed out - after washing, food, me making his lunches, electricity etc, etc - we were paying him to live here

My sister-in-law charged her kids $50 a week and that was about 8 years ago.O:)

thats what i was charged... bout the same time too...

That's what I paid - after my own suggestion - 20 or so years ago.

When I started uni (2002), I started out paying $100/fortnight board (Dad basically said 'name your price). As Centrelink dropped my Youth Allowance each year, so did the board (2nd year - $70, 3rd year $50). When I started working, it went back to $100/fornight (again 'name my price'), it stayed that way until I moved out in 2009. However, what started out as $100 covering everything became glorified rent as I ended up contributing to the electricity and paid for my own food (because my sister, who at the time lived with Mum and didn't pay a cent herself, used to guilt Dad into making me pay my own way). It didn't overly bother me because it was a good learning curve for when I moved out.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

i never paid a cent in board becuase i left when i was 15 and still in school. Moved in with a mate for a year then out with someone else after that.

But depending on how much they earn i would say 15-20% of their wage for the week?

Yep 20% sounds fair to me.

Before kids and mortgage my ideal targets for spending were:

20% accomodation
20% food, transport and entertainment
20% clothes and other necessities
20% tax
20% savings and big-ticket items.

i think anywhere from 10-20% is about right. teaches them fiscal responsibilty.
I knew a kid at school who parents took all their Youth allowance and all his wages from HJs. They then gave him back $20 a week for spending money. Poor kid :D

I paid $60 a FN before i left home at 17. all of a sudden $30 a week was lookin prtty effin good lol

Wasn't earning enough money going through uni (2006-07) to pay board but as soon as i got a full time job I bought a house with the mrs (lived at home until late last year and before moving out bought a 2nd house), that was enough to convince mum and dad that i understood the importance of spending wisely and got away with board :)

I rent a place off my Parents and they slug me 100 clams a week for the privilege and I assume my sister who is my somewhat annoying flatmate has a similar agreement with the Olds and it is used to cover the outgoing expenses. Certainly no profiteering off me what so ever.

I reckon I was paying about $40 - $50 per week in about 1995 when I started my apprenticeship. I was on about $170.00 per week as a 1st year.

If i did not pay my Dad would tally it up and put it on the fridge so what was owed.

Harsh ......I still and getting over it. :(
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

2 years ago once the child started earning $50 per week.
Need to wait until they start earning...........however, now I have 1 left, but a couple remain both studying.

Why charge them, when they provide an interesting challenge?
