1997ARL Grand final. Andrew Johns' pass to Darren Albert for the winning try for the Knights over Manly with 6 seconds to go. It stands out for me because Iwas fortunate enough to be there. The emotions in the stadium and in Newcastle afterwards will live with me forever. It was amazing and It would be extraordinary if i experiance anything like it again.

Here you are Punky.....The 1982 Cox Plate.....

As called by "the Accurate One" Bill Collins.....

Racing, caught them pretty well, English Wonder dropped out, Laubman and Debs Mate collided after the start. Both began OK and My Axeman’s the early leader in the centre from Alez Bijou and Fearless Pride (Thompsons going up to head them off and get the rails) Magaries forth. Deb’s Mate trapped wide with No Peer keeping it out, and Kingston Towns about 7th, then came Grosvner, Laubman pushed right off the track by Rare Form, 2 lengths to Isle of Man and Silver Bounty

At the 1600, Fearless Pride in front, off the rails, racing fiercely, Thompson eases lets Deb’s Mate go to the lead. One away 3rd My Axeman from Alez Bijou, No Peer a length to Magary. Half a length away Kingston Town from Grosvner, 3 deep is Laubman and then Rare Form, Gurners Lane, Isle of Man, English Wonder and Silver Bounty.

1300 out at the next corner Deb’s Mate a length and a ½ Fearless Pride and the pace is slow. 2 lengths Alez Bijou and a ½ My Axeman, 1 to Laubman still 3 deep from No Peer, 3 parts to Kingston Town and then 1 away Grosvner, Rare Form, and the Magary on the rails. Length and a ½ Gurners Lane, Isle of Man, 2 English Wonder, 1 Silver Bounty.

A 1000 m Deb’s Mate in front 3 parts Fearless Pride, length and a ½ My Axeman outside Alex Bijou. 1 length then to Laubman (Higgins can’t get him on the track). He was followed then by Kingston Town, No Peer the rails, length and a ½ Grosvner and Rare Form. They’re followed by Magary, hard ridden, and then a length Gurners Lane, Isle of Man, English Wonder, Silver Bounty.

600 out and Fearless Pride went up to Deb’s Mate and took a narrow lead. My Axeman immediately made his run on the outside from Alez Bijou and Laubman. Grosvner,…er,…trying to find his way through is Grosvner with Kingston Town hard ridden, then Gurners Lane around the outside from No Peer, and Magary, Isle of Man.

On the turn, 500 out, Fearless Pride and My Axeman together, a length and a ½ Laubman Kingston Town can’t win and then Alez Bijou and the 3 year old Grosvner running on

My Axeman took the lead from Fearless Pride, Grosvner coming down the outside is after them. My Axeman in front, Grosvner and Kingston Town flashing, he might win yet the champ. Grosvner took the lead, Oh, Kingston Towns swamping them.

What a run, Kingston Town wins it a length to Grosvner. My Axeman 3rd, 4th Fearless Pride, 5th Alez Bijou, then No Peer, Gurners Lane behind them is Magary. Further back in the field English Wonder, Silver Bounty, Deb’s Mate and then Laubman, Isle of Man and Rare Form is last of all.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

#1 Steve Waughs 200 against the Windies at Jamica in 1995 - the mental toughness was extraordinary
#2 The Americas cup 1983 - 137 year unbeaten run broken......
#3 Perkins at Atlanta (the outsider) and Barcelona (1st man to hold sub 59 sec 100s in the 1500 m - awesome)
#4 Campese v the All Blacks at Lansdowne Rd 1991, that pass to Horan
#5 that ball at Old Trafford, 1993

FWIW I can not for the life of me comprehend how anyone can put making the World Cup and making the 2nd Rd in the top 20 of Australian Sporting moments. Mind you it was a good achievement cetainly up there for 2006 but hardly an all time great achievement though.

I will freely admit Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, that european TV execs sell their souls to broadcast the games, that suicide rates increase in losing nations and I wont dispute that from a popularity, comemrcial event perspective it is akin to the Olympics.

However when performance of Nations at the soccer World Cup is analysed in a purely sporting sense i.e. what happens on the park, what is achieved in making the World Cup Finals, IMHO is no different to the top 16 at other major sports Rugby/Volleyball/Basketball becasue outside the top 35 soccer nations the depth falls away something chronic

Before the Soccer freaks jump up and down I know that only 100 nations play those sports seriously in the same way 200 play soccer seriously. It is simple mathmatical ratios really....

Making the top 32 in Soccer is like making the top 16 in Rugby (they have a top 20 World Cup)
Making the top 16 in Soccer is like a the top 8 or if you want to be generous to soccer the Semi Finals in a Rugby World Cup - the top five nations in Rugby are easily as as strong, if not more so than the top 16 in soccer, or the Basketball or Volleyball Semi Finals

People think the top 32 in soccer is so hot, I rememeber watching the top 24 nations in 1982 and seeing one of them getting beaten 10-1 (Honduras), Greece in 1994 were shit, like wise the US and Angola this year. Yes I know good teams don't make the World Cup but that is largely due to the politics were Europe is over represented compared to Africa and South America. So before the soccer freaks attempt to shoot me down, please humour me by doing some homework and seeing how lopsided some of the 1st rd group matches are in every world Cup, The equivalent of the Wallabies playing Namibia......I've given you one example....

Looking at other sports, I can make a case for the top 2 in hockey being as strong if not stronger than the top 16 in soccer

I will admit that making the top 16 in soccer is the equivant of making the World Cup final in cricket, but once again the cricketers trump the soccer players as they have won it three times.....

So the fact that Australia has won the equivalent of two World Cups (World cup & gold medal) in both Hockey and Rugby more than matches what happened in Germany this year in an sporting sense......

I mean FFS we couldn't even beat a team playng with 10 players for 30 mins!!!!

So there we go in addition to my top five you can put in 3 Cricket World Cups, 2 x hockey World Cups, 2 Rugby world Cups before the Soccerroos of 2006, not to mention the feats of herb elliot never beaten, Susie O'Neil, Deeks World Championship win in 1983, the team pursuit team being teh first team to break the 4 min barrier for the team time trial in 2001 (I think).....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
