There is nothing that exceptional about Adelaide prices - most everyday goods are the same or slightly cheaper than the rest of the country.

It is only the volatile items like petrol, bananas and house prices that get any coverage in the media, unlike the more boring trends found in everything else. Some items have remained extremely constant - you have been able to get a 2 Litre bottle of coke for around $2 (in supermarkets) for at least the last 10 years :!:

If you wait until about 9.00pm on a Thursday night, you can snare a fairly good lettuce for FREE out the back of Woolies at Parabanks from out of the dumpster. You might have to peel off a few of the outer leaves though...Oh! houses are cheap at Yunta at the moment, too!

Well, seems that the Advertiser - the online version, anyway - has been doing a bit of exaggeration then over the last 6 months. Who would have thought something like that possible?

I think that scrounging for 'free' lettuces in Woolies bins might be a bit drastic, but it'S good to know all of the options available, I suppose... :D

Sploosh, will you be staying with family for a while when you get back? The rental vacancy rate at the moment is less than 1% and they say it will be lower than what it is now by the end of the month. If you're thinking about renting, be warned - tenants are hanging on to what they have and rents are going up.

On the flipside, now is the time to buy a rental property! ;)

Unfortunately mine is rented out, otherwise would offer. And the missus sold her units.

What is your requirement for a house? Number of bedrooms/living areas... yard... etc?
There are certain areas (and no, not just further out) that are cheaper for the same thing as other areas.

Yeah, I read that story about a week or so ago about rental properties only having a 1% availability, meaning that rents (and perhaps, by default, the price of properies generally for sale too, as people feel the rental squeeze) are all going up. That was actually the issue that prompted me to ask the "Is Adelaide affordable" question.

[rant] The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that perhaps the squeeze isn't as bad as that, but someone, whose vested interests lies in seeing prices rise, has the ear of the Advertiser. Kind of like the supposed "Real Estate Institute", whose job is merely to constantly spew out propaganda about how well real estate is going in S.A. no matter what actual facts may or may not be. [/rant]

My wife and I intend to rent for the first 2, 3 or 4 months while we furiously look for a place that we can buy, preferably one that doesn't require a massive mortgage.

In the place we buy, we'll be looking for 3 bedrooms - or we'll have to settle for 2 if 3 seems unaffordable - something along the lines of a unit/townhouse that has a small back yard that we can have a few plants and keep a small dog, perhaps. As we want something reasonably close to to Marion/Castle Plaza/south of the city area, I don't think we'll be able to reaslistically afford anything more than a strata titled-something.

Sploosh, you are not as silly as you look...

PS, nothing at ALL to do with the fact that possibly the real estate companies in Adelaide may or may not be one of the largest buyers of advertising space in the paper......?

the current yield (income) on a rental property (2 to 2.5%) is about HALF you would get on a bloody bank term deposit! (and no, i'm not telling u to stick your money in a bank TD)

Didn't i hear that there was more sellers then buyers for the properties at Holdfast Shores recently?

If you rent find something that suits most of your needs and take it as its only going to get worse. A Female acquaintance of mine recently knocked back a house in Goodwood because wait for it ............ the friggin backyard was too small.  the stupid b*tch :?

if you are looking to buy in the area mentioned then a 3 bed courtyard place start at mid 300s

The rental market is only squeezed because house prices are over-inflated and less people can afford to buy - and then that bloke fom REISA says investors need to come along and buy more, which will only inflate house prices again.

And then they have the gall to stay gov taxes need to be reduced, when investors can already claim interest payments as tax deductions - sounds like double-dipping.

The only winners out of it all are REISA ans real estate companies - it is a greedy self-serving industry, but for some reason society seems to hold it in high esteem.
