I too can vouch for the magna, have had mine for over 6 years, hasnt missed a beat and I do about 2000k's a week going to and from work and general driving around
it's a great car for mine

Similar story, I bought a 12/98 Magna Advance V6 Wagon from Government auctions 7 years ago it had done 45,000Km it has now done 178,000Km and hasn't missed a beat. Brilliant car powerful, smooth confortable, brilliant build quality and utterly reliable. The downside is the depreciation, which is important if you are only going to hang on to it for a few years, but then again the Magnas were going for 4-5K$ less than the Commodores and Falcons at the time. I think the price differential is even greater now. It is possible to pick up a two year old Magna (<40,00km)with 3 years warranty remaining from the auctions for about $15K. The downside is you must come up with all the cash plus on-roads within 24hrs. Why anyone would buy a Commodore, Falcon, Camry or Magna secondhand from a dealer is a mystery to me? The only time I've ever used a dealer is buying new, because that is the only alternative! I was going to buy another Magna this year but the current one is going so well, I'll probably keep it for a few years yet,as it owes me nothing.

The only problem with the Magna (sorry to rain on your parade), is that they are the worst car in terms of depreciation, they lose half their value in about 2-3 years and tend to cost more to insure.

Don't buy Italian - I made that mistake - they are even worse because they are unreliable.

My sister stuck to Toyota's and had a good run. The most recent, a Corolla, a has never been a problem.

My Parents have had, VK-VS-VX-VY
personally liked the VX the best.

never had any problems, all were 6 cylinder sedans but the VK was a 5.0L V8 Wagon, which after a while was converted to gas.

Hey Mick, weird that the Magnas have such a bad reputation, although everyone I know reckon's they drive great. Problem with them if any, they're front wheel drive so towing is out/less beneficial.

Also, use discountnewcars.com.au and then you don't deal with car salesmen.

2 day old Falcon XR6 (6 speed auto), couldn't find a better car on the market! Highly recommend it!

But having said that, when our kids were babies we loved the wagon and probably couldn't have done without it, I'd recommend a S/W to any parent of young kids, couldn't imagine getting through those years with a normal boot.
Kept the wagon now too, still handy when carting big eskies, BBQs, tables, or moving stuff.

all cars lose value, we payed $28,000 for a VY 2 years ago, would be lucky to get $11,000 for it now.
as long as it does what you want it to in the time you have it, it dosent really bother me.

I really enjoyed and valued the second-hand 930 Turbo I had at one time, and the fact that I eventually sold it for 40% more than I had originally paid for it!! [PS; There was a bit of help from Paul Keating's management of the economy there - not just my own skills.]

I drive an 01 magna wagon and Mrs. Trac just got a 03 lancer, great little car, runs on bugger all juice.
The 3 kids fit in the back fairly easily too, pretty roomy in the back considering the size of the car.

Resale wise in 5 years it'll be a fantastic buy as it will only cost us 8k then.
The national average of 5 year old XR6s at the moment (with only a 4 speed gear box and no extras, mine has 6 speed and extras) is $16k to $20k at the moment so I should be able to make 10k in 5 years time if I want to sell it which I probably wont.
Basically got a car worth around 43k for $32794 in a salary package which also benefits us taxwise and includes rego, insurance, petrol, etc.
Make good money with Holdens, Fords, Mitsubishis and to a lesser degree Toyotas but no over cars were worth looking at as fleet price wasn't 10k less. Plus I wouldn't at anything less than a Holden or Ford because of size and feel of a car I enjoy, but the Falcon does leave the Holden for dead in comfort and handling IMHO.

But like Sam I dont buy cars to make money on resales, I buy cars to drive them.
If I wanted to invest money a car would be the last thing I'd put money into.

The question here is what cars parents have not what sort of cars to look for to make money or lose less money in.

Funny who these thing become a matter of opinion. At work we've just gone from Holdens to Fords for our fleet cars.....I notice the bumps in the country roads much more now in the base model 06 Falcons compared to our 04-05 Holdens.

As I said IMO.....The Falcon feels very stiff suspension wise....

Yeah, I think ours is set at $1.50 for the next 5 years, should do OK out of that. Be nice not having to tie in filling up the tank with Tuesdays.

I can't really comment on that as mine has sports suspension. I think the Holden's have switched to a similar suspension as the Falcons now as the Falcon's was miles in front though.
Holden's felt artificial to me in the past with less of a feel for the road, also lighter with less grunt, but I'd still prefer them to most other cars on the road.
And lets face it, if you're going to fork out mega $$$ for a new cars would you put anything in the hands of people working at Elizabeth?
Other thing that swayed me is the Falcon is a proven model now where the Holden only has their first model out and have already had recalls, etc. Thought I'd play it safe and go with comfort. Holden's boot did impress me though and I liked the look of the outside of it as it looked more like a Ford than a Holden but the interior was pretty crappy and looked cheap in parts. Was a bit worried the XR6 might look a bit dated but the MkII for 2007 has been spruced up and my car looks very hot. :D
