Oh dear...you poor poor fools Could be wrong but I think you'll find that most women have already made their mind up about you before you utter a word so wouldn't matter what you said as long as it wasn't too insulting...thats why the same line will work on some and not others.

Personally though, Punky is pretty close to the mark about it also being how you say it and Coorong has it right with a touch of cheeky charm

In my youth I used to look interested, but diffident and gentlemanly, and let them pick me up. It got to be a reflex habit, and once it got very embarrassing.

I was at a mate's place to dinner and he got called into work for an hour for some emergency, and I finished up backing round the table out of loyalty to the mate.
