Not quite correct - as CTP insurance is still included in the price of registration, paperwork is legally required to be posted at least 14 days before renewal is due.
Once the Government ditches the CTP insurance and makes everyone get their own (like in NSW I think) then it probably won't matter..
really? not that i doubt you but can you link where that is in the legislation? as far as i am aware there is nothing to force dpti to send the renewal, apart from the massive backlash they would receive if they stopped it. and do you mean renewal of the rego or the ctp? as the ctp doesnt run out for 30 days after your rego expires.
and squids, they certainly do still send the renewal. it is printed up between 5 and 6 weeks before it is due. they even send a reminder between 1 and 2 weeks after your rego expires, once again apart form a few circumstances where they dont (such as having your vehicle recorded as being seasonal), and then another after that to ask you to hand your number plates back in.
actually just as a bit of trivia, if your rego is due in early July your renewal may get printed less than 5 weeks till expiry. unfortunately the July renewals get held back as DPTI has to wait on the pollies to sign off and gazette the new fees for the new financial year before they can print them.
