No SA but QLD - Brisbanes second parallel runway has been approved and construction will start in 2 weeks and be completed in 2020 for flights. This will take brisbanes airport to a capable of landing/departing aircraft to over 100 an hour. The last few years have been hell landing here and been the worst delays in Australia. This second runway will bring in 5 billion to the economy by 2025 (predicted)

How many builders have gone down now?

Very sad to see.

The direct job losses get reported, but no mention of the indirect affect to tradies, must be tough out there.

I'm obviously no expert but I wouldn't have thought it would take 6 years to put down a runway

same here thought it was a bit long but due to most construction sites in Australia , no night or weekend shifts happen so its 9-5 week days.
They can build the tallest building in the world in 4 years and there is projects in Australia that take twice as long . As most countries overseas have night shifts that come in and weekend shifts

Looking at where it's being built and what the sub soil is I can see why it's going to take 6 years, there would have to be a massive hole dug and replaced with stable soil before they can even think about building a runwayImage

lets hope it not another media release, and then it becomes a dream and gets itself in crippling debt before it gets off the ground like some projects. What Adelaide needs is a subway like transport corridor from the airport to the CBD

The ancient Greeks had town planning right.
When a Polis (City) got to the limit of practical size they sent people out to start a new one rather than keep on spreading.
Melbourne and Sydney are abominations to get around in if you don't live in the inner suburbs where the public transport is practical.

Too right!
My last trip to Oz involved a research mission to Melbourne, to see if we could perhaps settle there with Mrs and little TRB. Wishing to check out a cheaper suburb I caught the train to Cranbourne, sort of near Frankston. I gave myself a lot of time to get back to watch the Footy at Etihad that night. The train claimed to get me there in about 40 minutes.
Anyway, after 20 minutes the train stops, everybody had to get off, services on the line had ceased. So there was a bus to drop people off at stations along the line. It took well over an hour to get to Cranbourne because the bus had to keep weaving in and out of side streets to get to the train stops, rather than just speeding down the main roads.
When I got to Cranbourne I realized there'd be no way of making it back to the footy on time using the same service, so I elected to find a bus that went direct to Melbourne. There weren't any! They all went to some other town center like Frankston or Dandenong where you had to link up with another bus route. The waiting times were bad enough without repeating the process at another terminus.
I ended up walking 30 or 40 minutes to find a working phone to call a cab, to drive me to the last train stop in operation in a vain attempt to get back in time for the Footy.
My research shows that in outer Melbourne, if the trains are shut down, you're screwed.

Yes, I lived in the outer east - Mt Dandenong, then Olinda.
Fortunately, I worked nearby, but I had to relay on my car.

I twice used public transport in the 10 years there, both times parking at Boronia and getting the train to the CBD to give evidence in Court, as driving into the CBD is also hopeless during the working day.

Not SA but announced yesterday by the QLD Government - Toowoomba Bypass to be completed in 2019. Construction to take 4 years. Cost of 1.2 Billion. Be a toll of ex amount of dollars for heavy vehicles , passenger vehicles are exempted on this road for a toll.

This cuts out 16 set of traffic lights and heavy vehicles can bypass the Toowoomba range finally. Notorious stretch of road, if you remember the old Devils elbow section of the SE Freeway. This is worse than that.

Welcomed news for vehicles using the Warrego/ Gore / New England highways and the local community. New International status Airport to be built for Toowoomba also, so things are look up for the Darling downs area of Queensland.
