If you win a $million on the Lotteries, they pay you the money. :D

Win a $million on the pokies the management says " Machine error, now f**k off "

(not that I have won a $million on either [yet] :( )

The same princple applies to Gall stones and Kidney stones, and so FC is on track.
Basically a hard object is in, and blocking, a duct that is too narrow for it to pass through easily, and fluid of one kind or another that is being secreted in whichever bladder and normally goes out through the duct is building up pressure behind it.

This stretches the bladder, and the duct, which hurts.
Sometimes if the rock is relatively small it can be forced through and relief is spontaneous.
But often it can't and surgery (or Lithotripsy) is the solution to remove it before the bladder is damaged by the stretching.

Then removing any others that may be lurking in the bladder is desirable to prevent recurrence.
Trying to find out what is causing the stone formation and stop more developing is also part of good management.

The childbirth analogy has parallels, except that the Uterus is much stronger and can resist the back pressure when it starts contracting and the duct can stretch enough to pass the object in most cases.

However it is a larger, if softer, "rock".

I wish I'd had this to quote from back in my first job from 1988 to 1992. I was between 16 and 20 at the time.

I was the only male on a shift with 30-40 much older, mostly married women. I had to put up with them constantly moaning about their husbands and what wimps they were. For example:

"He stubbed his toe and thinks he's dying."
"He's got a cold and thinks he's dying."

And so on on a daily basis.

The "punchline" was always "he's never been through childbirth so he'll never know true pain."

I learned to keep my trap shut very quickly. Which comes back to haunt me every time the unreported back injury I had in late 1990 rears it's ugly head.

I'd love to see the same women put up with Gout. While not childbirth it f*!@ing don't half tickle.

Yes! I had a mild episode shortly after my return from India in March this year - definitely not nice.
My Uric Acid levels were not above the range when tested, but my GP and I concluded they may have been transiently elevated due to a Purine rich diet while in India, and intermittent dehydration, not helped by the Kingfisher Ale being the safest liquid refreshment available to me since we were in rural areas most of the time.
(The yeast in beer adds to the Purine load - wines are not a problem - that is a myth.)

I've changed my diet since my return and have not had a second episode without having to take medication.

I'd overlooked the fact that meat based dishes in India are likely to contain more offal as they waste little of the animal there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purine
Purines are found in high concentration in meat and meat products, especially internal organs such as liver and kidney. In general, plant-based diets are low in purines.[5] Examples of high-purine sources include: sweetbreads, anchovies, sardines, liver, beef kidneys, brains, meat extracts (e.g., Oxo, Bovril), herring, mackerel, scallops, game meats, beer (from the yeast) and gravy.

A moderate amount of purine is also contained in beef, pork, poultry, other fish and seafood, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms, green peas, lentils, dried peas, beans, oatmeal, wheat bran, wheat germ, and hawthorn.[6]

Higher levels of meat and seafood consumption are associated with an increased risk of gout, whereas a higher level of consumption of dairy products is associated with a decreased risk. Moderate intake of purine-rich vegetables or protein is not associated with an increased risk of gout.[7]
