We dont wanna be dicks to our landlords or real estate guys because they've been really good. But we also dont like how our house is set out. We have a brand new house, but it has no driveway and the carport is on the back of the house backing onto a laneway. Its a terrible setup.

tif your happy with the real estate company ask them what they have, never know they might be able to work something out for you.

I've been talking with my wife about eventually buying our own place.

How much of a deposit etc is needed in order to make this happen?

Hickinbotham were doing a deal where you only need $5k in your bank for three months, there were obviously conditions on how much you could borrow etc etc, obviously you are borrowing a large percentage then but at least it's not dead money.

I'm not sure if that's still available

I think as interest rates have come down lending restrictions have eased a little. I don't think they'll ever go back to how they were pre GFC. Best thing to do is go and see your bank and ask. If either of your parents are in a position to go guarantor for you and the wife (basically if you default, they'll pay your mortgage) then that will give you more lending capacity.

Just make sure in any situation you can pay it back if you go down this path.

Oh wow, I hope that still applies.

Coincidentally, we've been looking at packages through Hickinbotham. There's some reasonably priced homes at Reidsview, Penfield and Parafield Gardens, and we like them judging by the floorplans and illustrations.

That's a good call mate, I hope it works out for us. I'd like to own my own home one day, and start a family.

Save as big a deposit that you can. Shorter mortgage, less interest.

Cheers mate, We're just trying to work out where we want to settle, and what kind of place would suit us. Then comes the hard part of saving for the deposit...

As Q, said save as a big a deposit as you can less you have to borrow, if though its your only way into the buying marking then seriously consider.

Also please see a finacial advisor before you take anyones advice on here.

Crash would require a massive increase in unemployment (defying short and long term trends).
