No, Im talking about a picture of Adam Goodes going around this week.

Fair enough, Winmar did it to make a statement. And it was very effective. But I dont see how its neccessary now. Isnt multiculturalism about looking PAST skin colour. The whole indeginous round seems racist as **** to me. All week they talk about which Aboriginal boys are good, yadda yadda. Shouldnt they talk about everybody, every week, and not single them out on race.

I know they're trying to do the right thing, but it all just feels condescending to me.

It was the 20 year anniversary of the Winmar incident this year, that is why the photo of Goodes was taken. There were also lots of other indigenous players photographed like that too.

And unless you are indigenous I would say you have no idea whether it is condescending or not. Once again white people trying to tell indigenous people how they should feel.

What cennals05 said. It was part of the indigenous round promotion. Talk about people jumping at shadows.

I'd like to know how calling anyone an "Ape " gets to be declared as unarguably or obviously racist.

The term has been used since around the 1920s to describe anyone who appears to have more muscle than brain, without reference to race.
It has appeared in American detective literature for years, and IIRC it came up in the TV series about Elliott Ness and his team - "The Untouchables".

However, that doesn't justify calling someone an "Ape", as abusiveness is wrong quite regardless of race.
It would be inappropriate to apply to Goodes as non-racist abuse anyway as he is clearly not stupid, and children should not be brought up to be reflexly abusive.

Other terms of abuse such as "Jungle bunny" (and, maybe, "monkey") can be seen as more clearly racist as they don't have the same history of use in another non-racial form of abuse.
I can see that "Ape" may be construed as an extension of these terms, but that interpretation is not consistent with its traditional usage.

FWIW, I have long thought that Barry Gibb has an ape-like appearance.

It's racist because it implies inferiority due to race.

Here is one of the problems Psyber. You obviously still think you are in the 1920s. Just because back then it wasn't deemed a racist term, doesn't mean it isn't now. Plus you had so many other words you could use back then. Gay didn't mean what it means now either.
