Q, I'd dispute that the term "ape" does specifically imply "inferiority due to race".

"Ape" is still used in literature in the traditional way with its traditional meaning - not just in the 1920s - I mentioned that just to demonstrate continuity of usage in literature.

I accept that the meaning of "gay" has been corrupted. That did not begin as abuse, but was adopted by the "gay" community who chose to adopt the word as their own as an alternative to the old abusive terms, or the more clinical and explicit term "homosexual". It is now only beginning to become a word of abuse, which means the "gay" movement may, in time, find another word to use for themselves.

"Black b*****d", or similar, would have been clear racial abuse if it had been used.

you have a point there, i still think it has been overdone starting with goodes, hopefully it just burns itself out, there is a huge wave of resentment out there cos of different rules for different folks, it happens at my sons school, and gives him a bad impression, depending on your colour decides what you can and cant do a lot of the time, hence racial hatred is borne out of this crap
