In the context "grown up" in my first post here I meant the older, more hardened, ones who are really set in a hostile mode, not all disturbed kids.
And yes I have talked to a lot of disturbed youth. In my earlier career I ran an inpatient adolescent unit in SA for most of two years.
I found it necessary to weed out the older and more aggressive ones for the sake of the younger ones you could do something with.
Otherwise they just set themselves up as gang leaders and dragged the younger ones along with them.
Once that weeding out was done we had a generally good outcome rate.
The Jesuits were right with, "Give me the boy, and I will give you the man."
If you can't intercede and break the pattern young enough, or early enough in the process, you don't get far.
