Group of mates went over last weekend. One is now in the RAH being tested as he has all the symptoms of the "Swine Flu". If he does have it a group of about 10 blokes and their partners will be quarantined for a week.

They have tested a huge amount of people over the last few weeks, many morew than SA, NSW, WA or Qld. My bro-in-law is adament that if NSW tested the same number of people as Victoria, they would have a very similar number of confirmed cases. He likened it to a state saying they have no one speeding on their roads, but also not having any cops out on the roads to catch them !!!
A classic Melbourne response - no other place could possibly be better to be and if it appears so it is faked...
No one over there could believe I was choosing to leave Melbourne for Adelaide, or that so many leave for Queensland every year for that matter..

One good thing about the Swine 'Flu, it has given me an excuse to put off starting to work again.
I think I may put it off til Spring, after I've gotten back from South Africa.
[You lose your motivation to work a bit once you are no longer driven by needing the money.]

I should add that my brother-in-law works in the press release section of the Victorian Health Department. He has been involved with all the press conferences and media releases. So his opinion may be slightly clouded... ;)

From today's paper:
'Commom sense' on swine flu

South Australians risk being swept up in Victoria's swine flu epidemic if they do not heed the advice of the Health Department.
SA Health chief medical officer Paddy Phillips yesterday appealed for common sense.
"We're asking all South Australians to think about the good of the community and do the right thing," he said.
This included avoiding unneccessary travel to Melbourne"

I reckon I'll call off my trip to Melbourne next month unless things improve greatly as I pride myself on being a good parent, having common sense and doing my part for the community.
Yes, the family and I will miss out on Geelong v the Saints and the kids will be disappointed but I'd be completely irresponsible if I went if things were as they are now. :(

Hope it clears up for the Finals at least! What a terrible year to get a full family membership for all Melbourne games. :(

I'm going with a group from the Zoological Society to Kruger, and Mokhohlolo Zoo.
The trip includes behind the scenes access not usually available to regular tourists.

Cool. Any of that include a wander if the Jo'burg streets at night?

If you can be bothered maybe do a little travelogue with pics for us, I'd love to hear about it.

Sorry to hijack the thread, whufc

I think it's a bit harsh to say im not a good parent for taking my daughter to see her grandad. After speaking to a doctor he said he we have more chance of having a car crash on the way over there than catching the swine flu.

Also Wedgie im sure if somone hinted at you not being a good parent on this site you would have the thread/post shut down extremley quickly.

I understand you didn't say i was a bad parent directly but your post can definately be percieved that way. Very unhappy jan

I commented honestly on how I would feel about myself if I took my kids to Victoria.
We all have different standards on different things and as I understand it my kids are a lot older than yours.
If you're going to ask for an opinion on something and then get upset if you receive one you don't want to then perhaps you shouldn't ask?
I assume you'll also be angry with the SA Health chief for insinuating you don't have common sense and aren't doing your part for the community?
Fly the grandparents over here, you'll save money and avoid car crashes even if you're not concerned about other factors.

And please, enough of the theatrics suggesting Id shut down a thread if someone gave an opinion, the mods would have to be in agreeance. Stupid post that mate.

Is you trip going to have you back for the North v Central game?

I'm told Jo'burg at night is for armed groups only, but I'll find out more!
[I've recently met a lady who has lived in Jo'berg.]
I'll take the semi-compact Canon digital with a stabilised 10x optical zoom f3.5 lens, which used to belong to my wife.
Its lens is not as good as the Zeiss f2 on my Sony, but it is more portable.

Opinions on whether i should go or not yes but to make a comment which basically says person A is a good father and person B is not a good father based on one aspect of fatherhood is a bit cheap, but thats just my opinion.

And yes will definately be back in time for the Central vs North, but the the way the last 2 games have gone maybe i should extend my holiday.

If person B only talks about his own circumstances which are completely different to Person A then perhaps Person A shouldn't get hysterical. Crikey, you ask a question, I tell you what I as a parent would do and why with info provided from the SA Health Chief and you get upset?

Which part of Elizabeth do you stand at as I want to avoid the pig flu when I go (the kids will be safe at home but Id hate to be the one to pass it onto them)

whufc whatever decison you make will be the right one. Personally I would have no problems taking my kids to see family and friends right nor in Victoria - just need to be more vigilent with basic hygine precautions.

I think the Doctors comment is very apt.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I didn't ask for your opinion on whether i was a good parent or not. I asked whether i should go to Melbourne or not.

And yes im going to specifically find out where you are at the game next weekend and then proceded to sneeze all over you

As a good father i suppose you will be wearing a face mask to the football as you can't guarentee no one there has the 'swine flu'.

Aren't school age kids more at risk than babies?
Also if my family went it would be to sit in the Telstra Dome under the one roof with 55000 others so Id assume my situation would be different to WHUFCs hence the comments soley relating to my own situation in regard to my parenting.

Your humour doesn't translate so readily Wedgie. I remember you wrote a yarn about falling in love with a French girl as you crushed grapes together in Bordeaux (or somewhere near), and I thought you were serious, until I read another of your mickey-taking posts several weeks later #-o

As I said to Hondo just take everything I write as a joke as I'm not a very serious guy, old fashioned sort of guy who likes a laugh and hates the politically correct. Bit ofa feral without looking like one.

As if I would avoid a part of the ground where someone who had been to Victoria stands. Crikey!

PS I can't believe you fell for that one about the French Girl!

To avoid starting another thread I was thinking about going to 2 Angels concerts next month and I think they might be touring Victoria before heading here.

Should I:

a) Get extremely drunk and have a great time both nights

b) Get extremely drunk and have a great time both nights

or

c) Get extremely drunk and have a great time both nights

All advice will be taken onboard.

I read Wedgie's post as purely about his feelings and how he would handle the situation if it were him.
I didn't see any imputation of bad parenting to anyone who had a different view, or chose to act differently.
There seems to have been a bit of oversensitivity in action here since..
