Good on you parents for wanting to set a good example to your children.

I have never been overweight in my life. I eat enough to satisfy hunger pangs and then stop. I eat all sorts of food, good and bad, all in moderation. Who taught me this? My parents. They did not teach me to be a fast-food swilling, deep fried everything and lots of sugar eating child. I simply was not allowed. They also took the time to do this for my brother and I. Some parents these days think it's easier to put whatever Johnny wants on his plate to keep the peace. The dinner table used to be a battleground for me as a child as my mother and I had mexican stand-offs each night. But I'm grateful for it now.

I watch the generations after me expanding horifically and they are taking up more of my space.

Spot on Mk and same here. Oh the memories of dinnertime battles resulting in having to eat cold veg...carrots and broad beans in my case  still can't eat broad beans tho.

...and sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks were a once a week treat...usually when we were all together watching the telly on a Saturday evening. If you had to have a snack between meals it was a bit of fruit or nothing.

Glad to say that the godkid's parents have followed a similar approach...maybe not quite so strict but they certainly don't allow them to pig out on any old crap...from the moment they were born they've been the most well behaved kids I've ever seen and they can't get enough of school and sports...and even though both parents work they always make time to have homecooked meals...as far as I'm concerned it's mostly down to their diet.

JAS

I am on a low sugar eating plan *(due to very high sugar.. averaging 16)... by cutting out FUIC and full strength coke and all other sugary treats I have dropped 36 kilos in 14 months... wasnt easy at the start, but I really believe Ive managed to retrain my braiin and now I don't even look for the sweet stuff and I'm feeling loads better... I also go for a brisk 3 k walk each night with the dog, takes about 40 minutes and is a pain in the bum but I'm really feeling the benefits so am going to keep it up.
RIP my DH 1964 - 2009 - You were one of the best and I miss you

I have had a bet with my girlfriend that i could go without drive through fast food longer then she could as a new years resolution. I am still going and have lost 6 kgs so far this year without any real hard work or special exercise. think this will only get better once i get off my butt and go to footy training. amazing to think what no maccas/ kfc/ fat jacks will to do to you.

=D> :-bd well done LC and cripple fantastic effort...amazing the difference just a few changes can make.

By making a real effort to eat the 5 portions of fruit and veg a day thing and adopt portion control (ie stop being a greedy cow) for the first time in years I've just dropped below the 12 stone mark \:D/ I've no idea what that is in kilobits or whatever so you'll have to work that out yourselves

For future reference JAS, 12 x 14 divided by 2.2 is the approximate conversion.
It simplifies to stones x 7, less 10%,or pounds halved. less 10%.

Not even Fisho - wholegrain and wholemeal still have traces of white flour in it and is still a fairly high GI. Chuck it all out and buy soy and linseed - it's the only bread I eat now - and no more than 2 slices a day. ESPECIALLY good for womens health and wellbeing - but the linseed is good for your skin hair and nails.

You get all the naturally occuring carbs you need from vegies.

Another tip - always start your meal with a couple of mouthfuls of protien, as your body will start to process this first and at a faster rate than carbs so will improve your metabolism.

My GI chart has white bread at about 91 and wholemeal bread at 50. I don't know if that means wholemeal flour mixed with white flour or 100% pure brown flour. Interestingly though, my chart lists brown rice at 56, and 50% brown rice as 58, and full white rice at 88. I find it pretty amazing that only 2 points seperates full brown from 50% brown yet white is a full 30 points on from there.
Just for perspective, honey has 88, white sugar 110, spaghetti 65 meat ranges from 40 to 45.

In Japan wholemeal bread is bloody rare. I have seen one bakery with it in all my time here and I have been searching a long time. Wholemeal flour is available though, and I make my own bread when I need it. It tastes much better if I blend the white and brown flour 50/50. The Japanese recipes recommend a mix of about 15 (brown) to about 75 (white), and the bread still comes out looking brown and tasting wholemeal so I reckon that the brown is the dominant grain and perhaps this is the reason (in the case of rice) why it has such an impact on the GI.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
