In the late 90's I suggested to my mum $75 a week might be fair but still pretty much paid for all my own food. When I was gone the most my brother would give mum was $40 a week without buying any of his own food and he was a machine when it came to eating too. She was actually financially better off when he moved out.

I pay $100 a fortnight which works out to be a little more than 10%.

That's ****ed up! You can rent a whole house for well under $300.

I was in and out of my parents' house from age 16, but whenever I was living there I would pay $50 a week in board. I think I was 18 when Dad first started charging me. When I was 21 I came home from the US and Dad raised it to $60 a week. I didn't get along with my family and I spent most of my time staying in Mr McSpaz's one-bedroom flat in Coro, but I reckon $60 was still fair enough, I did eat their food and use electricity and stuff whenever I was home, and Centrelink was giving me $800 a fortnight on the single mum's pension* plus study allowance, so I could well afford it.

*I wasn't rorting the system - when I was 21 I'd only just started going out with MM and we weren't living together as a family until the following year. :)

I didn't pay any while I was studying (high school and univeristy) while working part-time, as soon as I finished my degree it was $100/fortnight which I still thought was a good deal. That was 18 months ago, in that time I've managed to buy myself a new car and bought a house and moved in, so I guess the olds are now probably even happier than I was before.

I reckon a combination of Booney + Fish is a good one, at age 14.

indeed! where was your wisdom 6 or 7 years ago?!?!

yes, the rent on the house mum we were living in was $320pw. and it wasn't like mum wasn't making any money herself, i estimate she was on around $800-$900 a week. mind you, she spent a helluva lot of her money on cigarettes and useless nic-naks from cheap as chips.
