We had a quote for some paving, retaining storm water for $11500 cash ... accepted the quote and had the work done, and the guy has come back and said we need to pay an extra $1200 for "variations". The thing is the dude who did the work is Mrs Jase's cousin.

My question is, if you accept the quote is that like a contract and that is all you have to pay...?

Sure is. Sometimes those there is extra work that needs to be doe and isn't seen until your in the middle of job. In saying that though he should of stopped shown you the problem and given you another quote to fix it. A no time should he go a head and do extra work and expect you to pay extra on top of your quote.

That's about right ^. Was there anything on paper, eg prices for siteworks, retaining & paving itemised? Standard practice is that if a variation pops up it should be discussed & a price set for the works as the work is in progress.
Did the variation bill have the actual variations listed or just verbalized?
If working for a builder/ contractor variations are always on paper & signed off by all parties before the work progresses.
Hey soccer you owe us 45million.

I have a friend who bought a house and a week after moving in they are having heaps of problems that should have been picked up in the building inspection. Is there someone she can contact to report the inspector or to get something done?

Ask him for a receipt for all the works, with costs itemised. ;)

Anyone got any jobs going?

Since having to have time off work because of the surgery I had, the guy I share an office with is being a dick. He keeps telling our boss im not letting him know im having days off. Then today he claims I havent told him I have appointments at the RAH this morning when we had a long conversation about it last week.

I had to screenshot all our messages last week to prove to our boss that ive told him.

Gonna be interesting when I get to work after lunch.

Good work

Keep everything documented HH3

If you wanna go to extremes I know of people who have recorded conversations via phone and taken notes from that without the other party knowing

Or

You can take notes of conversation in front of him anf then hand him s copy of important info like appointment you have. Even make a third copy and inform your colleague you are also informing the boss

The wanker. Last week I messaged him and our boss. Then the next message directly under the one I wrote to him, he accused me of not telling him, and it being an ongoing problem.

I had 3 weeks sick leave and 8 weeks annual leave saved up because I dont take any time off. The one time I have no choice, and its a big **** drama.

Send follow up email documenting any verbal conversation, and cc your boss in on it. Easiest way to go

and if possible, notify of any pre-booked appointments as soon as you know about them so he can prepare for not having you there.

If you're only legally required to tell your boss of your absences and you don't report to the other peanut at all, report him for harrasment.

Why do vouchers/gift cards with a set dollar limit need an expiry date?

Two reasons

First - so they can account for their liabilities at each point in time. Would make bad business sense to have an unfounded liability go forever into the future.

Second - they know that a huge proportion of vouchers never actually get claimed by the expiry. Free money for them. In fact places like scoopon base their business around the fact that a lot of vouchers never get claimed. The old employer of my wife did one of those deals once and they get 10% of claimed vouchers and 50% of unclaimed vouchers.
