Govt funding of an organisation that does so much good in the community is hardly a big deal, it probably just means they'll get $25k less in the future. Given that the royal family is essentially funded by the British Govt/people, having Kate and William request presents be given to charity is hardly a magnanimous gesture.

Having worked as an accountant for the Royal Flying Doctor Service for two years, I can tell you that the RFDS was overjoyed to receive this donation. The RFDS does it hard when it comes to funding and this was a great gesture of William and Kate (to have the RFDS as a beneficiary of the wedding). $25 000 may mean very little to someone of your wealth, GWW, but to the RFDS it is very much valued.

Its not about my wealth, I'm just saying the Govt should be supporting such a great community organisation anyway. I'm sure the Australian Govt will continue to pay for members of the royal family (one of the wealthiest families in the world) to visit Australia in the future, despite the fact that money would be much better spent on organisations such as the flying doctors.

Point taken about the need for the government to provide more funding for organisations such as the RFDS. It definitely does need to as the RFDS gets very little Commonwealth and State funding. However, this is beyond William's and Kate's control and should not take away from the gesture which they did. Reduce it to basics: they could have had two choices - receive wedding gifts or have money given to charity. What did they do? - Gave money to charity. I am not sure how you can possibly say this was a bad gesture on their part. It was a wonderful one, appreciated I am sure, by many charities and the people they help even if it was not appreciated by you.
