Why, when buying a new car, people worry about the re-sale value and things that might affect it like colour, optional extras, wheel size, transmission type etc.

I reckon if you're the one forking out the money, buy the car YOU want and stuff what features the next owner might desire, especially when they're too stingy to buy a new one themselves!

Depends on how long you plan to keep the car for. Some people do only keep there cars for 2-3 years and upgrade, if your doing that it does make sense to buy something that keeps it's resale value. If your planning on keeping it for a long time then it doesn't really matter. The old magna's use to be horrible for resale value, and it wasn't even once it had been driven it was once you signed those papers that dropped a heap of money.

at 22.5% depreciation per annum, keep the car for about 5 years maximum, you off-set your re-sale loss against the depreciation. all cars depreciate rapidly once out of the showroom, surely you already knew that?

If i want to buy a new car then i will, if it loses money then thats my problem. I was only saying it is the truth to a post made about how people complain saying it is the truth.

Easy answer, don't buy brand new cars 8)

Buy them with about 20k on the clock and still under warranty, and then dispose of them at end of warranty and buy another nearly new car. Means you're only forking out an extra couple of grand each time instead of an extra $10k+

Depends if you can get fleet pricing.

I just made $8k end of lease profit on a commodore I bought brand new. Planning the same on a subaru I just bought. Approx 20% discount beats the on road depreciation.

My wife's Range Rover lasted 13 years, and her Musso that succeeded it about the same.
Both had done about 160,000 Km when their transmissions packed it in, and they were both developing electrical problems

My Audi S2 is 17 years old and in good nick, except the clutch just went - at 165,000 km.
I intend to fix it and keep it - but it is a special case.

I used to turn over my business cars about every 4 years in the days when I was able to 100% deduct them and was paying a high tax rate.

My first three cars were Holdens - second hand FJ, HR premier, HK 327 Monaro.
Isn't that enough?

After that, apart from those mentioned above, 2 Japs, 2 Italians, and 3 Germans.
