Beasley ( RIP mate ) had some degenerative knee issues which our vet suggested a reconstruction for. About $2500 or so was the quote, but not exactly sure until completed. He was 10 going 11, was always an outside dog and the thought of putting him through the surgery, having him caged for 4 weeks and then on limited activity for another 8 seemed like far too much stress to put him through. Beagles don't control their movements, their stomach does, so keeping him quiet would have been a task.

We dropped about 5kg off him ( fat beagle was 22kg down to under 17 ) and nature took it's course slowing him down anyway as he got older. This was late '15 into '16....sadly we had to put him down about 7 weeks ago, unrelated issues. Miss him, so does his tri coloured side kick.

How old, breed?

Yes, had a Collie do his cruciate 2 years ago $600 X ray and $4,500 for the surgery. the local vet has a surgeon come in to do it once a week.
Nights in care can be expensive (Had another in Vet hospital over in Vic for Heart surgery). The real issue for you, then starts after surgery, as the rehab is required 3 to 4 times a day. If you do not do this then the same risks around recovery and well being occur as with a human. He spent 6 weeks with me stuck with my knee doing rehab so only fair I spent 6 weeks with him. He has fully recovered now, however there is an increased chance he will do the other one according to the stats, so we stop him from chasing the Roos out of the paddock now.

boxer kelpie cross with a bit of husky in him, we got him from SA Dog Rescue, only 2 years old.

It's only a partial tear from what the first vet told us, but they don't operate on bigger dogs.

Meadows vet quoted $3500 but we don't have that kind of money to just spend on the spot.

It's not an easy decision. The money is a factor, I don't care what anyone says when it comes to their pets, there is most certainly a line. People say "I'll do anything, any cost". No, you have a line.If the dog is in pain or unable to live a "normal" life, then the money becomes less relevant.

Beasley was much older, losing the weight helped him and my biggest concern was the post surgery rehab. If it's not adhered to then likely hood of a repeat injury is high. Good luck mate, it's a tough decision process.

With my cat over christmas, we were given the option twice to put him down. $4,500 later, and $60 a fortnight for medicated food for life, and he's back annoying us with his overly affectionate manner.

See if they offer vet pay - you can make re- payments fortnightly, I did it once with one of fat cats surgeries, it's a godsend if you're eligible.

Mrs Jase and I are starting the process of becoming Long Term Foster Carers... Both the Junior Jases are keen for this as well, and I was just wondering if anyone here had gone through the process and if so what were your thoughts on how it all went?

We are "signing up" with Lutheran Care so just interested in anyone's stories through the process.

Cheers

We use them for functions at work sometimes. They are ok but I think making them myself would be better but time consuming
