I was wondering how much people got back or if anyone had to pay extra.

I got $648 back this past year.

Got back just over $800,did myself over internet.

I got back SFA

Can't remember how much but it was some back in the bank. Probably won't get any back next year bloody HECS

Yeah, I did it over the internet, one of the best things the govt's ever done.
Put $20 extra away each pay and got about $40 back for the whole year.
Since we went over 100k pa a few years ago we've had to pay that extra medicare levy on top of the normal one which takes everything away.

I haven't had our accountants put in returns for 2005-06 yet but expect to get a bill for several thousands beyond what the companies have paid already.

Got about 10 grand last year. Should get about 9 this year.
I had been paying too much tax (due to my HECS debt ending but still paying the same rate) and therefore got it back. Also, living in the country gave a zone rebate.

Got back just over 3.5 k...happy with that.
Expect more next year due to not working...

?? Only just starting to get the tax stuff together. It just happens every year, I say ill get an appointment with the accountant the day the group certificates come in, and as much as the missus nags its always last minute stuff, same again this year.

Ive always done my taxes myself but am starting to think its time that I went through a tax agent or accountant as they could more than pay for themselves.
Should get a better return next year too as we started salary packaging our new car which brings our gross pay down.

Then you claim the tax agents fees on next years return !

Would never have private health insurance, biggest rip off of all time, you'd have to be crazy to have private health insurance unless you have a chronic health issue.
We had private health insurance when our first child was born (Chloe) and because she was prem she had to remain at FMC, Mrs Wedgie got a private room, it cost us 1k.
When we had our second child (Matthew) we didn't have private health insurance and Mrs Wedgie still got a private room at the FMC, only difference was we didn't have to pay 1k.
I can't believe anyone pays for Private Health Insurance, I don't know one person that wouldn't be better off (even taking tax breaks into account) if they just put the money they fork out aside and could pay for private hospitals in case of emergencey.
Such a rip off.

Private cover isn't really for the big crises in life. It pays if you get some minor problem like a hernia and don't want to be on a waiting list forever. Also, in Victoria if you have a psych problem like depression the public system is not interested unless you are totally psychotic and an acute suicide or homocide risk, so, for example, if the Mrs gets post-partum depression after a child is born you are on your own, at least until she tries to kill herself or the child.

I've had over $20k worth of knee and ankle surgery myself, plus smac jr had an eye operation at 15 months old that all went on the private cover.

None of it would have happened when it did with surgeons as good as the ones who did it if it wasnt for the private cover.

Will take the insurance company a while to break even with me, wouldn't stop it for any reason.

mick, Socialism Rules? You must be kidding, when the government gives back $21 billion in tax deductions to residential property investors, making the haves have more, and housing unaffordable for the next generation.

Gotta disagree with you there Wedgie. PHI is one of the best investments I've ever made. I did agree with your theory that you'd be better off putting the money aside, but playing sport, I've been sooo much better off having had it - I even did the sums and came out close to $1,000 better off over the last 5 years.

It's more than paid for itself for me via shoulder recon, ankle recon, bills for glasses, dentists, countless hours of physio.

I think if you play sport, especially footy, it's an absolute MUST. I'll re-consider now I've retired (after I get my shoulder re-conned AGAIN), but if I was still playing any form of sport, I'd definitely have it.

I know that when players come to the Eagles, all players must have private cover or else they must cover the whole cost.
