The Mrs, is on the lookout for a new/demo small car eg Getz, Swift, Fiesta.
Does anyone have any good/bad opinions/experience of these cars??

Just my opinion but I reckon you cant go past a Honda Civic - the Jazz is a little small.... well made, safe and economical.. oh and looks a treat too!

Fiesta isnt bad, we were given one a couple of months back by a Ford dealer to test drive for a week. Very basic inside, but had plenty of go for a small car. German-made too, so had all the bells-and-whistles as far as safety features. Was too small for us though, as we have 2 kids.
The Swift, Fiesta, Barina etc all seemed good value, but they were just too small. The next size up - Corolla, Mazda3, Focus etc were out of our price range, so the second-hand option ended up being the most sensible one for us, as it was only for the wife to get to and from work and pick up the kids. We ended up buying a 2005 Pulsar, 30000km, for $15k.

The Civic is a better size, my Mum has recently bought one. Nice car, but she has had some quality issues with it - power windows stuffing up and transmission problems. The Civic and Jazz are made in Thailand, so you arent getting the same Japanese made quality you used to get with Honda.

If you intend to keep it for a while, buy brand new. Most of the cars mentioned here are what I would call interchangeable - very little difference other than looks. Go with what is most comfortable/appealling and then look after it until it is ****.

Sell for a poultry sum and repeat. Only way to get value out of a brand new small car, IMO.

The Mitsubishi Colt is a pretty good buy, for a cheaper small car I would go with one made in Japan rather than Korea or Malaysia as the quality controls are significantly higher.

If in the secondhand market, don't get a Daewoo!

Have driven Mazda's all my driving life and have had a 121, Astina (V6) and now have a 6.
Good mate got the 3, and my in laws have a 2. Can't go wrong....

SJABC, I alwayst thought you would be better off purchasing one less than a year old, but still second-hand. The asking price for mine new was $21450 but I got it for $13500 as a six-month old car. The RAA guy who roadtested it said he would buy it if I didn't so it was in good nick.

bulldogproud, the 121 was secondhand, the Astina new, and the 6 was a demo...
Have also got a Hyundai Trajet (a seven seater people mover) due to the size of the clan, which I traded in ANOTHER Mazda 121 !
Have owned/had 5 Mazda's in 16 years !!

Cool, SJABC. I nearly bought a Mazda at one time, it was my dream from childhood days. I bought a Volvo instead, followed by a Daewoo. Still have the Daewoo, but never again!
