ATM ROBBERY

A very good friend of mine had an unpleasant experience this week.
He rolled up at an ATM mid evening and noticed 2 guys in a car on the premises
He wanted to make a withdrawal of $200 but only took out $50 as was suspicious.
As the $50 came out the robber snatched it from him.
My mate took him on and beat him.
A second robber struck him on the head from behind.
My mate also beat him.
He left quickly with the 2 would be robbers worse for wear.
He went to the hospital to have the cut head fixed up.
A couple of hours later one of the robbers was admitted to the hospital injured.
Oh what a night !

Personally I would have left without withdrawing if sus.
If confronted would have allowed the robbers to take the $50.

The friend won a battle on principle but has a sore head.
I explained next time the 2nd man might have a knife or gun.....

Its a sad world.

Remember the Magpie Principle (tm). Magpies never swoop if they think you can see them. Keep your eyes trained on the birds and they'll let you walk by in peace.

Keep this principle in mind when in exposed public places like ATMs or big carparks. Look around and be aware of those around you. Not only that, but make sure the people around you know that you're aware of them. Make eye contact. Nine times out of ten, those who are sizing you up will wait for a softer target.

Myself, if I need to withdraw clams at night, I'll head for a nearby servo which has an ATM of my bank.

Mally, where did this happen?
Considering the number of ATM used everyday it's a pretty rare occurrence.
Desperate druggies will resort to desperate measures though. All except seeking help for their addiction. :?

I know it doesn't help if an incident causes serious damage, but are ATM's all under CCTV?

Glad you're friend is ok. I guess none of knows if we would fight or flee until we're in that kind of situation.

Connie...if your ATM's are similar to ours then they will all have a camera inside so if, as Mally says, they money was snatched as it came out of the machine then the company that owns ATM should be able to provide police with footage of the incident. From what I've seen on crime shows here it can be very clear footage too, making the thief clearly identifiable.

Regards
JAS

it was North of the Torrens, hence not unusual

only good thing North of the torrens is Adelaide Oval, and that only just scrapes in!

While we were in Adelaide we only used the ATM inside the supermarket at the Unley shopping centre, and even there, as in Melbourne, because she is tiny she operated the machine and I stood next to her looking outwards. However, we mainly use credit cards as they are easily cancelled if stolen, and it saves carrying much cash.

I would have let them have the cash if they are stealing from me they need it more than me.

Nope! none of them would attract me! I have driven through Gawler and Port Pirie. However if you want to include the Barossa and Clare Valleys I'll support that.
