firstly i haven't had either fines 'touchwood' for over 2 years but i think that the fines should be a % of a persons wage ie a person working on $100,000.00 would find it a lot easier to pay than someone on the lower end of the scale lets say $30,000.00 & thats why i think it should be a %age

what do you guys think ?

so basically what you are saying is that if Mr Joe blow who is getting buckets loads of cash drives like an idiot say 99km/h in a 50 zone, Miss unemployed comes along and does the same, why should she get any less fine for doing the same thing. It like saying, oh Mr millionaire, you just shot and killed someone so you get life, oh miss unemployed, you shot someone and killed them, a suspended sentence. Sorry, do the crime, pay the fine or do the time, one for all, all for one. Just my opinion

I"ve read stories in the World section of the paper about some country in Europe that fines people for traffic offences according to their income/wealth. Dont think it will ever happen in Oz though.

I voted no, but perhaps I shouldn't have as my accountant could probably prove I earn nothing by diverting more to my wife......

For Speeding and Red Light Camera fines there should be an additional levy charged, then as a result the State Government can rescind the Emergency Services Levy and make it up on Speeding & Red Light Camera fines.........

A fine is a fine

You can't make it more for 1 and less for another - did the wealthier person commit more of an offence :?

If I'm unemployed can I do what I like?

That's revenue raising to the extreme

I would love to see those on lower incomes helped out. However, the suggested scheme would see rich people claiming that their spouse (assuming the spouse is on a much lower income) was driving at the time. Hence, no gain for the poor. What I would like to see happen is a much smaller fine for the first offence followed by graduated increases.

the biggest penalty - demerit points - is the same for all....just cause I earn more than the unemployed why should they get a discount if its the same offence.... :?

i voted yes because i see some merits but how about over all long weekends double demerit points and double the fine but if you really want to make it fun if you are caught the next long weekend you could go double or nothing ;)

To look at this issue in terms of responsibilty, and not as revenue raising or taxation by stealth, perhaps the fine should be increased in proportion to the risk to others the offender generates - for example increased if you are speeding on bald tyres, in vehicle with iffy brakes, or one that has not been serviced lately, or as someone else suggested for repeated offences.

Why should being less wealthy reduce your responsibility to not risk the lives of others?!

Already happens, you get pinned for speeding and then you can get another fine on top if that for not complying with the vehicles standards as oulined in the Act, fine from memory is around 200 bucks

I think they do that in Sweden (?).
IMO I think it should be a more harsher penalty, not just money.
Say 7 - 10 k over = fine, 10 - 15 k over = fine and loss of licence for 3 months, 15 - 20 k over fine, loss of licence for 6 months, anymore than 20 k fine, loss of licence for 12 months and surrender involved motor vehicle for auction which goes into victims of crime coffers.
All fines and sentences in Australia are a joke and need to be reviewed. Hoon laws, don't just take the car, sell the thing and suspend the driver for 12 months, WITH spot checks to ensure they do not drive illegally...

I guess I could live with that now that I am perhaps more mature! It is more than 20 years since I became the first person to ever get off a charge of "Speed Dangerous..." in SA.
