We have the hugely successful 'Things that give you the sh1ts' thread to bring out the grumpy old man/woman that lives within each of us so I thought I'd try a thread where we can mention things that brighten our days.

I've just returned from my monthly hunter/gathering trip to the local 'big' supermarket. When I staggered onto the overcrowded bus under the weight of much shopping a school kid jumped up without hesitation or any prompting and offered me a seat. I know it's not much but it is a very rare occurrence these days and it did kind of make my day.

I could probably have put this in the other thread as I'm 46 no 86 but I was the oldest person without a seat and as a kid I was taught to offer my seat to anyone older than me.

So, come on you lot, what random acts of kindness have you received lately to lift your spirits...and keep it clean

The bus driver saw me running for the bus and instead of waiting for me at the bus stop to get to him, he started up and drove towards me so that I didn't have to bust my heels running. I thought that was nice. It sustained me until I got to work....

....then I was broken within the first five minutes.

I am learning a new part of my job and the customers are always willing to wait a lil while longer whilst I get everything together to help process their loan or buy.

Actually the kid was a girl, I'd say no more than about 12 or 13 years old.

Another shopping related one...a few days ago at my local Co-Op store I was queueing at the checkout with a basket full of food...young lad (probably about 10 yo) joined queue behind me with just a comic and some sweets. I tell him that if thats all he's buying he can go ahead of me. He at first looks shocked, then gives me a huge smile and, quite loudly, says 'thank you very much'. Everyone within earshot looks over and smiles in amazement at such a polite child.

Trust me...manners like that from a kid are almost unheard of round here. Apparently we now have the highest crime rate among 'under 8's' in Scotland not bad for what is supposed to be a idyllic rural/coastal region.

The actions that some kids do at Christmas - for instance I instituted a program where students brought in gifts for hampers for needy families. The response from students at each school this has taken place in has been incredible (and most of these kids are from families doing it not so easily themselves).

I tend to teach at not so well off Catholic colleges where kids do do it pretty tough. For instance, most of my time was at Mary MacKillop College, right across the road from Loreto College. The majority of families who could afford to sent their kids to Loreto. They were great girls at MacKillop.

They do good work, and the Sister concerned with the fund-raising actually addressed the letter in pen and signed it - that suggested some commercial agent wasn't ripping of most of the receipts. I am happy giving to charity if I believe it isn't being creamed off by an agency. We get a lot of requests and I look at them each month and decide who gets a donation based on such capricious and subjective measures... The obviously commercialised ones go in the bin.

I'd rather do that than let the government get too much and spend it inapropriately [any government].

So that's why you taught at Sacred Heart!

That is probably why I only taught for one year at Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart is a great school, don't get me wrong, but not really the type I am meant to work at.

The taxi driver mailing you back your credit card after you left it with him, getting out blind around 4am, when you'd come to the end of the journey. (In the meantime since it arrived in the post, I had cancelled it, but was still stunned to have it turn up, with no extra purchases whatsoever!!!!!)

soccer superstar ruud vannistelrooy last week playing in a champions league game against lazio gave his shirt to a girl in the stadium after the game... as he gave the shirt they both started to cry .. and no one knew why

yesterday it came to light that the young lass had come from the same town ruud grew up in and followed his career . Ruud's father discovered this girl had got cancer and had two months to live..

So ruud paid for airflights/motel and game ticket to watch him play.


for all the negative press soccer gets ... this one is great
