They got rid of it cos it lost heaps of money and wasn't financially viable. Shame though cos i agree with you.

Funny... I went to visit some interstate mates staying at the Holiday village next door and thought the same thing myself... Marineland was always good value.

Apparantly Mr Percival is still alive too...

I shudder to think about those poor dolphins that lived in a pool and were made to jump through flaming hoops - fun as it was back then, I don't think they would get away with it today

I thought it got closed because they were worried about the health of the various fish / dolphins etc???

might have something to do with the value of the land they were occupying?

Marineland was a wicked place! I remember many school trips and trips with my parents there.. it was in an ideal location and I loved the acquarium... iirc it was the greenies and their darn protesting that eventually closed the place down.. so sad that kids of today have to travel up to Seaworld or the Melbourne acquarium to see something similar.

i don't think it was unsafe for the dolphins because the flames were on the outside of the hoops & the dolphins went through the 'middle' of the hoops & i'm sure the doogooders would have got it stopped/banned if it were deemed dangerous for the aniMAL & isn't exercise good for all of us ?

I went there a few times, great memories

My parents have told me the story that they went to the 'Dining with the Dolphins' restaurant when Marineland was in its death throes. They proudly got themselves perched in a prime spot so they could watch the dolphins frolic all night in wonder while they ate their meal. Trouble is, 'frolic' became 'shag' and they (the dolphins, not my parents) proceeded to boof away the night like it was schoolies week. Guess it's all in the telling but my dad recalls it was truly a mind boggling experience!

My favourite memories of Marineland were getting to feed Mr Percival on my birthday and Davy Jones Locker where you went inside a huge (or at least it seemed so) underwater aquarium cunningly disguised as a whale.

well what do you expect when Dolphins are the only other aniMAL other than humans that get "jiggy with it" for fun not just reproductive purposes

hey zip zap, i've seen doco's that show dolphins, porpoises & some whales doing the same 'tricks' in the wild, so i'd say it is natural & if an aniMAL didn't want to 'perform' i'm sure it would refuse

I could make a joke about 'getting wet' or 'blowholes' but this is a family friendly forum!

I went there a couple of times, but too young to remember much of visits. Under 5/6 I think ( I might ask parents if they have foto's)- what year did it close?

I recall also going to a place at point of Port Macquarie in NSW. That too is closed or was last time up there 20 years ago.
