What is this stuff that falls from the sky?
I had forgotten what rain was, hopefully my lawn will recoup now after browning away the last year.

One heavy downpour for a few hours, funny how everything quickly greens up and then the pollies are saying how much water is all of a sudden going to be flowing in the Murray River

Good news is some of it actually may be flowing into the river, if it gets past the cotton farmers that is!
There were reasonable rains in the catchment up north (places like Bourke and Griffith) which is where we need it if it is to be of any help to us.

Is there a website somewhere that actually records how much various rivers/reservoirs are holding? i.e. 3% increase from last week, or whatever?

great for farmers....perhaps to stop some dust...?
was in mildura today at about 2pm, 3 or so hours after the riverland got a bit of rain. from east of millewa (lake cullulleraine) was nothing but dust storms all the way to mildura. near millewa vineyards had to slow down to about 50-60 kph.

Dutchy,, it's much more than the harvest.
The rain helps raise the underground bore and tank water levels up they rely on so much and it also helps raise feed for cattle rather than the farmer having to fork out heaps of hard earned to keep their stock alive.
Not only that, a lot of them don't have mains water so for them to keep smelling as fresh as they possibly can,, the rain helps in that way as well.
The veggie patches they have to grow their own produce rather than pay the exorbitant prices rural supermarkets charge... I could go on but trust me,, rain is welcome most times of the year from the farmers, not just in harvest time.

agree with what you have said Smithy however the rains will hardly fill their dams, at the end of the day their crops are the big $$$ earner they would rather the rain then....in fact rain during harvest can stuff their yield

Dutchy, harvest is generally finished now. Has finished much earlier due to poor rains earlier in the year. So it is good for farmers. Ground moisture is very important in preparing for next year's crop.

It does depend on what the farmers are growing though. Am not so sure that the current rain is all that great for citrus fruit (I could be wrong here though).
Cheers

Not all farmers harvest... I'm sure the beef we eat will taste better for the paddocks full of cows getting a good soak.

A hella lots of water flushing down Sturt creek over last couple of day, straight out to sea via the Pat!
Good news though is my rainwater tank now almost full after being 1/8 almost empty a few weeks ago.

BDP- not really much citrus at the moment. We're between citrus seasons I think.

stone fruit time at the moment. rain not good there, tends to split the fruit leaving it only good for cutting
