Why, when its the truth?
Australia Day commemorates the day the English invaded Australia murdering many Australians and taking their land.
Hardly a day to celebrate for All Australians.
Surely a much more appropriate day would be one commemorating when Australia became a nation?

Why shouldn't the people who call it Invastion Day call themselves Australians as they're the only people acknowledging all people in this country not just a group of Anglo Saxans. IMHO they're more Australian than the one's who celebrate the day are.

Personally I couldn't think of a worse day on the calender than Jan 26 for all Australians to celebrate our great country.

Not sure what you're getting at here Wedgie. On January 26, 1788 European settlement began in this country. While this was a disastorous turn of events for the indigenous people was the beginning of what we are today and thus should be celebrated.

The 'Anglo-Saxons' bit is what I find confusing. Are you saying that Asian or other Europeans who came to Australia have the right to call it 'Invasion Day' or is the right strictly reserved for the Indigenous Australians. I can cop it from the Black man but not from fellow Europeans such as Italians, Greeks, etc or the Asians.

Rightly or wrongly depending on your point of view, the Poms put in the hard yards first. The French had a shot and Holland had a crack but we are still predominantly an Anglo Saxon nation. Your point about the day 'we became a nation' is a good one but as yet we aren't an independent republic so I would argue that this date has yet to occur in our history.

While most of us accept that Australia has a black history, this Invasion day stuff might tend to suggest, 'OK, **** it. We'll all piss off back to Asia and Europe and give it back to the Indigenous Aussies'. What would happen to our 'great country' then?

A very emotive issue.

Nope. Because that day is already a public holiday to allow the populace to get over their hangovers.

Yes REB I am talking from an Aboriginal perspective.
The beginning of what we are today in my view commenced tens of thousands of years ago.
We have a unique identity and a unique culture and its the culmination of many things not just what the white folk brought to New South Wales 1788.
It may have been a glorious day for the Poms when they invaded Australia and killed a few black fellas as well as starting their opression of the black folk for many, many years but Im certainly not going to bask in it, it would be unAustralian if I did as I respect all cultures that make this great country.
It'd actually be more appropriate celebrating Australia Day on the day the first Greeks, Italians or others entered this country, as the only difference between them and the poms was they were invited and didn't go on a mission of murder and opression like the Poms did nor dump their convicts here.
Celebrating the day that the race with the least amount of respect for those already here claimed this country as it own would be the last day any true Australian would celebrate.

Im unsure but what day do most other countries celebrate their national day, isn't it the day their country's were first founded/declared/etc?
We should be the same, its not perfect but a hell of an improvement on the current farce.
And to make Australia Day this year even worse is there's no bowls on!!!
What could be more Australian than a game of lawn bowls!

I don't think you can go back that far when what we are essentially celebrating is a nationalistic holiday. We might as well get rid of all such holidays and celebrate 'man day' and even then, feminists might ark up and suggest that this only celebrated the day that women were forced into generations of abject slavery.

While I don't support the racist doctrine of terra nullis or everything that has been done to the black man in this country, I don't believe it is un-Australian for anyone to celebrate Australia day. I also don't believe it is un-Australian for people who choose not to celebrate the day. That to me is what makes Australia a great country - the freedom to choose.

Anyway, Im more annoyed by those bloody Lamb ads, Im protesting by not having a BBQ in the week either side of Australia Day.
I might have waffles for breakfast, chinese for lunch and a nice curry for tea.
I could always wash it down with West End since its Japanese owned.
I'll wear my American gridiron top, Umbro shorts and my Spurs hat.

With no bowls on I might spend the day advancing my World of Warcraft character.

I'll celebrate being an Australian on the 28th as there's no more thing Australian than having the day off work. :D

Anzac Day the main day. I think my son just appreciating now how cool it is to have his birthday on Anzac Day.

Separately, Proclamation Day in SA, Dec 28th, is the most useless former holiday date of all time. SA founding fathers should have had the sense to land sometime around September, because I could have used a day off through September during the finals when I was a kid.
