Public Holidays - Melb Cup?

Postby Squawk » Tue Mar 18, 2008 12:12 am

There is often talk about a public holiday for the Melb Cup. As well, people variously proclaim other occasions should be recognised with a public holiday.

If we had 2 new public holidays in SA at the expense of another two public holidays, which two would you scrap and which 2 would you bring in?

Me:

Scrap - Labour Day and Queens Birthday
Keep Volunteers Day (which is the same day as the Queens Birthday public holiday) and shift it to later in the year - eg July/August.
Public Holiday 2 should be announced annually and be one off recognition for commemoration of a special historical or present day event.

Your thoughts?

Other than being annual, Labour Day fits your holiday 2 already...........leave it as it is!

Hang on.. we can't get rid of Labour Day for 2 reasons..

1) Its the ONLY public holiday between June and Christmas

2) Imagine all the sickies the bloody Centrals supporters would chuck on the monday if there were no Monday holiday after the GF..

You know to me it would be better if Adelaide, Perth cups etc were all on the same day(melb cup day) one public holiday for the entire nation.
I say this as I work for a company with locations in NSW and VIC.And I have a chuckle when I over hear my team leader fielding questions like why do you have a public holiday .When interstate workers can not understand why we didn't work the day before.
Mind you the Day before and the Day after the melb cup (or any public )are hectic work wise form Victoria .

Either leave 'em alone or scrap them all and make the "workers" work!

We'll never agree on which days are important. For example I live in Melbourne but can see no reason to have a PH for a bloody horse race I don't even listen to.

Alterntatively every week should be a 4 day working week...??

Has to be.

Something like 3 - 4 times as many people go to the Clipsal then the Adelaide Cup...

And that's just the Thursday!

What was the crowd at the Adelaide Cup?

15,000?

Official crowd figures for this years Clipsal 500..

Clipsal 500 organisers announced a crowd of 291,000 for the four days of this year's V8 Supercar event -- 15,000 more than last year, and with almost 92,000 on Sunday.
