Except Police. They get given big $$$ without barely asking for anything more.

That's very true. Just out of interest, about how much is your average Police officer salary?

I feel bad about the teacher strike but feel some kind of need to support it as a member of the union. Don't think they are going about it the right way though and actually voted against it at my worksite.

But wow, the Emergency doctors who resigned today because they didn't get over $100k pay increase makes the teachers' claims look like chicken feed. I think anyone who works in Emergency deserves a medal but $425 000??

Here you go zipzap...(and I've tried to keep it as simple as possible).

As at 1 July 2008

Constable – level 1 $49,574-level 8 $57,359
Senior Constable/SC 1st Class/Brevit Sergeant $59,755 – $69,474
Sergeant – level 1 $71,320 – level 5 $78,974
Senior Sergeant – level 1 $80,537 – level 5 $84,597

Senior Connie is the “average” level and represents most patrol officers.

Commissioned ranks

Inspector – level 1 $100,002 – level 4 $107,913
Chief Inspector - $110,894
Superintendent – level 1 $112,135 – level 4 $121,162
Chief Superintendent $127,232
Commander $131,753

(Not sure if Assistant Commissioner rank is equivalent to Commander)

Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner are paid via contract at Executive levels.

For the purposes of comparison....

As at 1 July 2004

Constable – level 1 $37,513-level 11 $47,847
Senior Constable/SC 1st Class/Brevit Sergeant $47,847 – ($57,181 from 1/10/04 when extra level introduced)
Sergeant – level 1 $53,465 – level 5 ($63,674 from 1/10/04 when extra level 5 was introduced)
Senior Sergeant – level 1 $58,864 – level 5 $63,173

Commissioned ranks

Inspector – $81,515. 3 more levels were added at 1/10/04 to make level 1 paid at $84,872 and level 4 paid at $90,706.
Chief Inspector - $86,546.
Superintendent – level 1 $91,397. 3 more levels were added at 1/10/04 to make level 1 paid at $94,255 and level 4 paid at $101,212
Chief Superintendent $99,298
Commander $102,819

As at 1 July 2001

Constable – level 1 $33,510-level 11 $42,711
Senior Constable level 1 $42,741 – level 5 $46,570
Sergeant – level 1 $47,760 – level 4 $50,655
Senior Sergeant – level 1 $52,582 – level 5 $56,432

Commissioned ranks

Inspector – $72,817
Chief Inspector - $77,310
Superintendent – level 1 $81,644
Chief Superintendent $88,702
Commander $91,848

Taking the lowest rate and comparing the 2001 salary to the 2008 salary, (ie discounting the extra levels added in to give ranks an extra pay rise in addition to the annual increase, without actually being promoted), salary increases by rank in seven years have been as follows:

Constable 43%
Senior Constable 40%
Sergeant 55%
Senior Sergeant 53%
Inspector 37%
Chief Inspector 43%
Superintendent 37%
Chief Superintendent 43%
Commander 43%

The average annual increase for all police ranks since 1 July 2001 is 6.24% per annum.

And then (if your keen), you can compound the effect of those increases into their superannuation pensions……

SA Public School teachers will be having a stop-work on Tuesday. First time, I believe, we've had one for a full day in the 8 years I've been teaching.

I'll think you would find most are just Constables at the moment.......
