If a person were looking at getting someone to install a pergola (perhaps 4m long, 3m wide) with that clear type of roofing and paving bricks underneath - grass needs ripping up first - how much do you reckon it'd cost, roughly? Nothing fancy, just a decent, good looking job. Would it be along the lines of $1,500? $3,000? more? As you can see, I don't really have an accurate idea as yet.

With paving you could be looking at $100 per sq/m,there is $1200.

With prep work on the area (at least 2 days) and dumping of soil (you would have to dig out 100mm over the are to allow for pavers to drop) then pergola I think you would be looking at closer to $5k.

The paving I am aware of going rate,pergolas not so much.

try adding another zero to those figures and you will be in the ballpark.......... although you could be able to get change out of 20k if you shop around maybe

I have just done some rough calcs based on my knowledge and you could come out between 10k and 15k

that is based on

Prepwork 2 days
timber around 2k
3 carpenters 1 day
roofer 1 day plus material
paving (inc prep)
small but reasonable profit if a builder looks after the job
and a bit of leeway for any mistakes for my calculations

Got a quote on replacing an existing pergola a few years back. The dimensions are about the same as what you mentioned. To rip down the existing pergola, replace it with a colorbond affair, would have cost a bit under 10 K IIRC. We considered looking at permapine after that, but have since abandoned plans to replace it until we decide what we're going to do with the house long term. I got the old man to help me pull it down a couple of months ago - since it was about to fall down of its own accord.

I had a flat roof pergola that was 6m x 4m attached to the house put up and paved 2 years ago...............It cost about $7000 from memory. $5000 for pergola and $2000 for the paving. I know that was 2 years ago but taking inflation into account you should still get away with it under $10,000. I used Softwoods for the pergola and Jim's paving for the paving if that helps.

PS. I had to paint the pergola for that price and dig the grass up and get the ground reasonably level for Jim's paving..........but anyone can do that.

Me and my mates put up a 5mx8m flat roof pergola for around the $3500 mark, got fielders to give me a qoute with a drawing and went from there, i recommend the box section steel beams, light , no matinence, also with the plastic sheeting, it gets really hot during summer, i only had 3 sheets in that span and i took them down, if you were sitting underneath them in the middle of the day it got too hot.

there are products on the market that let light in and keep out the heat (over 70%)

Thanks for al the replies so far. Looks like I've drastically undersetimated the cost. Guess it'll be "enjoy the open skies" for a while to come, heh heh

I got one put up about 3 years ago, about 60-70 sqm, double gable and about 80 sqm of paving and all up including the paving cost about 15k
great job though

we used pergola's of distinction for our recent job (Holden Hill). They were shocking. We got ripped off badly in hindsight and the finished product whilst looking ok, hides some terrible flaws in the structural design.

I know this doesn't help (it looks like smac can though) but if you need to, steer away from this mob.

I went and did a WEA course on paving, and have since done about 125sqm at my place. Doesn't look 100% professional but then the cost savings is astronomical. You could do the same with pergola's however licensing could be a problem! Because I think you have to have a building license to construct something of that size.
