I've printed off the big Southcott ad for a mate, he did his apprenticeship in that Gilles St site and still works for them nearly 30 years later.

Great stuff, loving a browse! I find it intriguing how roads were in slightly different positions to be "fixed" later on.

A street directory I used for years didn't have Lonsdale Highway or Oaklands Rd matching up.
My old man used to drive taxis and I loved getting his hand me down UBDs, I would go through them spending hours for some reason.

This is fascinating, having look at it now. Looking at the maps around my area, part of Largs North used be named Swansea which is now the name of my family homes street. My part of Largs North didn't exist which I knew as it's relativity new but I didn't know Victoria road was split into separate streets/roads, Largs Terrace and Outer Harbour Road. Lady Gowrie Drive didn't exist, The Esplanade didn't run all the way along and stopped at Strathfield Terrace which turned into Outer Harbour Road.

Also interesting to see that the Port River ran all the way down to Grange.

My Dad grew up in Glanville, his first money making gig was setting rabbit traps before school, going back after school and dispatching them on the banks of the Port and skinning them before he collected the afternoon papers and did the rounds of the Port pubs yelling out to the patrons "Come and get your News!" then, when they lobbed outside he'd flog them his fresh rabbits. He's told me about rabbiting in "Bristol", I never knew where it was, until today.

My old man grew up down the Port as well. His father was a pro fisherman catching god only knows what in the Port River in the 30’s & 40’s. My dad told me stories of selling the catch door to door in the streets of Rosewater.... yelling “ Fisho” as the made their way along.

Another favourite from my Dad, was as a teenager so the 50’s he would go to the grain stores at the Port with an air riffle and ping off the pidgeons in the area. Pluck them, clean them and sell them on the way home on his bike.

Different times for sure!

My Grandparents had a 1953 UBD Street Directory that I used to like looking at.

When my grandmother died 10 years ago I wish I had "claimed" it.

Being 17 years older than this version It went all the way to the outer country suburbs of Reynella and that emerging development named after the new Queen...

Back to the better part of Adelaide (the South) it was interesting to look at with respect to the Willunga Train line and what passed as Lonsdale Highway.

Driving north through Bosworth Park and we get to Gepps Cross intersection, I'll veer off to the right to get on to Gawler Road.

Through these old Port stories @Corona Man and I have just worked out that his Aunty is my best mate from high schools Grandmother and I grew up listening to his Uncle and cousins, learning how to treat visitors to Alberton Oval from the bowling club. Magnificent.

Question is, what the f*ck happened to you mate?

Let me guess - after the game they'd stroll over to Alberton East and give the toffs a serve before looking for a house party to gate-crash in Kelmscott or Everton, or perhaps wander over the wrong side of the tracks to find some trouble in 'Gray-Town.'
