Was just wondering if anyone out there knows the legality of the police parking in their cars at night(on the side of the road so it looks like a regular parked car) and having a non regular camera/radar setup in the car with the only warning 200mtrs up the road after you've been pinged.

What do you call a "non regular camera/radar setup"?

They are permitted to park on the side of the road to use a radar camera, and the sign is always after the camera as required by the Road Traffic Act.

I know a great method of beating the speed cameras....stick to the speed limit stupid

It is programmed to go off at a certain speed. The cop just sits in the car, whereas normally they hold the radar gun. Is it only in South Australia the sign is after the target area? What is the point of that?

Speed cameras aren't much of a deterrent not to speed if everyone knows were they are!

Do they still allow you a 10 kph margin? They give you 3 kph in Victoria, and I don't think there are any signs before or after them here.

I think it's 5kph margin

It's a 7 kph margin. I've never seen them operate at night time (until recently) being inside the car.

They are not cops in the car, they are speed camera operators - standard public servants. Tolerances are not made public here in SA.

yeah but the SA minister had no troubles revealing the tolerances of Victoria so you work it out .

anyway I was positive that I got done late last year near Henley High School on a Saturday evening. Still waiting for the letter to arrive..... maybe I was wrong?

I think in most states speedometers are allowed a 10% accuracy margin so at 60k it could read anything from 54 to 66 kph and be legal, and at 110 it could read from 99 to 121.
Back in the late 1980s in SA the cops just allowed 10 kph because they couldn't be expected to be able to work out 10%.

Here in Vic. at 60 kph they allow you 3kph [5%] - less than legal speedo variance - and at 100Kph they still only allow 3kph...
Your speedo being within legal range and misleading you into speeding in not a defence in Victoria.

in regards to signage after the camera. this is the Queenslands version

Under the guidelines of the Queensland Police Service Traffic Manual, section 6.6.17, the
sign may be placed between five and thirty metres past the speed camera in the direction
of travel of target vehicles.
The purpose of the sign is to alert motorists, who have had their speed checked, of the
presence of radar to enable them to appropriately adjust their speed to a safer level in
instances where they are exceeding the speed limit. It is a Service requirement for the
sign to be in place. There is no legislative requirement for the Speed Camera in Use
sign to be used on a speed camera deployment.

here in canberra for mobile cameras
Mobile cameras display portable signs displaying the posted speed limit for the road and a message "Your speed has been checked". These signs may be placed adjacent to or on the speed camera vehicle.

I know there is a margin for error on the speedo but when I was allegedly snapped I looked down at the and was doing 62/3 Km/h I thought great I am in the 'zone' but 200m after the save lives sign I see a sign saying 60 km/h which means I was in a 50 zone. I was possibly 13 km/h over the limit and got nothing..........

heater, do you find that cars regularly overtake you, even though it says you are doing say 3-4 km/h over the limit? Becuase that's what happens to me - I'm always doing less than what the speedo says. So I thought that may happen to you and that's why you didn't get fined.

I have since sold that car and bought a brand new one with cruise control. I seem to have developed a habit of using it on South rd, Port rd and ANZAC hwy

Makes driving a little easier; not having to look down at that stick every so often.

I would have thought if you didn't get the fine by 4 weeks later, then you wouldn't get one.

Yeah I know, but I was peaking for those 4 weeks. It was not registered in my name but was in my old man's, he would have hit the roof.
