after aureleos comments about adelaide being a pissant town, it got me thinking does the word actually refer to the animal?

What word, and who's aureleos ?

According to the Oxford Consise Dictionary pissant used as an insult is 17th century USA slang from piss + ant.

I think that might mean it's derived from piss rather than ant

I posted the details because I thought some other people may be interested in the resemblance of the words from two different sources.

No worries mate, an interesting point you did bring up the was the word puissant which although meaning powerful only refers to powerful as in a nation being strong or a royal or even a scholar, etc not directly as in brute strength. I think its one of those words in another language that we don't quite have an equivilent to in our language.
Your post got me thinking about the south of France as when I was travelling through Marseilles I got my french from a girl next door, teaching me night and day. We became lovers while she was employed part time as a grape stomper (man she looked good covered in purple grape juice). She was also a scholar at the local French University (I think it was named Aix-Marseille or something similar) and she pointed out this interesting word to me as we sipped real champagne whilst having a picnic in her fathers vineyards. Im sure a good man like yourself appreciates real champagne and not the imitation stuff that was on sale for so many years down here.
