Passive smoking appears to be associated with increased odds of developing cognitive impairment, a study finds.
Published in the British Medical Journal the study found that people with high levels of salivary continine – a biomarker for recent exposure to second hand smoke – were more likely to be cognitively impaired than those exposed to little or no second hand smoke (OR 1.44). Cognitive impairment was defined by the lowest 10% of scores on a battery of neuropsychological tests.

When the people were divided into quintiles according to continine levels the risk increased with each increased level of continine, and the risk was highest for those people who had never smoked but were exposed to the highest levels of second hand smoke (OR1.70). In an editorial about the research, the University of California’s Mark D. Eisner said that the evidence of an exposure-response gradient between continine concentration and cognitive impairment increases the likelihood that the association is a causal one.

Because cognitive impairment develops over many years, the ideal metric to measure exposure would be one that captures cumulative lifetime exposure, he said. He added that publicity of the suspected link between smoking and dementia may resonate powerfully with the public and increase awareness of the harms of passive smoking.

ill admit, im a smoker.

but im all for the no smoking in pubs (makes going out so much more enjoyable), not with children in the car (what brain-dead lowlifes would do this anyway?), and most definately making sure you are not blowing your second-hand smoke into someones face. (i even hate others blowing smoke in my face)

i figure if im stupid enough to have such a filthy habit, i have the responsibility to not make other people suffer.

Among the substances in third-hand smoke are hydrogen cyanide, used in chemical weapons; butane, which is used in lighter fluid; toluene, found in paint thinners; arsenic; lead; carbon monoxide; and even polonium-210, the highly radioactive carcinogen that was used to murder former Russian spy Alexander V. Litvinenko in 2006. Eleven of the compounds are highly carcinogenic.

Unbelievable really what cigarette manufacturers can get away with in their toxic products.

If the current federal government are truly serious about health care, they'll produce a plan to phase out tobacco as a legal consumer product.
Obviously it would create a tax revenue hole, but large savings in health costs are possible further down the track.

You've no idea the hell I'm having trying not to start again at the moment...after giving up 5 years ago I'd kill for a packet right now thank god for ice cream.

I take your points, but I'd happily see cigarettes 'go underground' if it meant I could walk around public places not having to inhale that putrid, toxic crap

well done JAS, keep at it!! its harder than non-smokers think. I quit for like 4 months, but discovered i had to quit drinking alcohol as well (the two seem to go hand in hand). the next time i had a drink...back to the drawing board.

i figure i will quit when im ready. there's no point trying to do something when your hearts not in it!
