GOUT "Oh the pain the pain of it all."

Gout is a painful inflammation usually in the joints of the feet area
A bulid up of Uric acid in those areas accumalates over a period of time
The areas swell and can be from a slight pain to an agonising pain.

Ive been a Gout sufferer for almost 20 years
The first attack was awful for pain
I have managed it well ever since and had a good game plan to eradicate it quickly

However at xmas time I suffered a severe attack in the right foot big toe
Had it, then it returned in my left foot big toe in Febuary
Was nearly Ok but twice the last 2 weekends it flared up when standing on it
2 weeks ago had it in the left side of the left ankle, got better, pain moderate
This week it has got me in the left foot ankle an the right hand side, pain immense
4 attacks in 4 different areas since xmas

The pain is excrutiating[as Gout sufferers would know]
I am in a wheelchair for a week, on painkillers and indocid medications

Ive had some very good responses in the past on this website on various matters
I have a great deal of knowledge on Gout
But would appreciate any obvious or unusual treatments thru medications or diet etc if anyone can assist.

As the greatest Doctor of all Doctor Smith used to say "Oh the pain the pain of it all."

I had a friend who suffered badly with gout.
Two things he had to try and steer clear of Tomatoes and Beer.

He was successful with the first of the two, the second well not so much !!

O:)

Mate I sympathise with you, it's a real b*st*rd.
Get your quack to put you on 300mg Zyloprim tablets, they're like horse pills but 1 per day once your current state has cleared. Been on them for a few years now, no more problems.
Stay away from anything with tomato in it, no crustaceans or acidic things like vinegar, red wine and the like. It's all because your liver can't break down the uric acid quickly enough but you're better off with gout than kidney stones and that's the next step after gout.

Yes, the accumulation of Uric Acid crystals is appallingly painful.
Some people are genetically predisposed to produce excessive amounts and need long term treatment.
Others can be managed with medication for acute episodes and diet to restrict the proteins that produce Uric Acid,
Interestingly, apart from the Dalmatian, dogs don't get gout because they oxidise Uric Acid to Allantoin.

This Wikipedia summary is fairly good - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gout
The dog connection is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allantoin

I can sympathise slightly with you panther arthritis gets me in the left knee(just about every day all day if I'm at work ) and lower back .And when I went to get a second opinion that specialist said the right knee is not so hot .Every GP I saw over my knee told me it was cartilage (one before testing swore it was gout)not arthritis Orthopaedic Surgeons once you beg them to actually look at the knee would just say Arthritis.
Sorry back to what I was going to post
Beware of some medications I can't take anti inflammatory medications. They give me the runs something shocking. Not to mention my Cardiologist nearly had a fit when he heard Orthopaedic Surgeons at his hospital were trying to make me take them.He was somewhat like Atila the Hun to younger quacks he terrified them .

So I'm left to take Panadol or the home brand twice in my 8 hour shifts. And chemarts home brand strong medication at night or when the pain is really bad.hell some nights I cant lay with the leg flat bent etc etc .I dont tell my work any more if I need a sick day or two with my knee i just tell em I have gastro or something. Two or more days without walking on hard concrete helps .And when I have tried to put up with it for a week or so my local doc gets mad with me.which is better than the Orthopaedic section of the QEH.If your not 100 they aren't interested .
Just watch some of those hardcore meds mate .ulcers heart attacks etc etc.

Apparently if you drop a bit of weight it helps.

There's this bloke called Mal who used to post here, and he suffered also. Pity he's
not posting any more, as you could ask him for advice...... ;)

I can sympathise with you MJ. I have a form of athritis called (excuse my bad medical spelling) ankolysing spondilitis. Its an arthritis that only affects the sacroiliac (SI) joint where the spine attaches to the pelvis. Apparently it mainly affects males, however I am one of the lucky few females to have it.

No cure yet - but I was lucky enough to get into the Rheumatology Clinic at the RAH and saw the famous Professor Clealand (the guy discovered the benefits of fish oil).

It took 4 years to diagnose me, and I am only 21. It generally at its worse during the winter, and between 2:30-3:30am (key time for arthritis "flare ups"), however sometimes I have found myself bed ridden for a week.

I REFUSE point blank to take anti-inflammatories, due to their long term side effects, and the treatment that the clinic has is pretty full on.

I have found that a special form of pain killer called Panadol Osteo is the BEST. Its a normal form of Panadol, however it is slow release, and designed for long term use. You take 3 tablets a day, and eventually the medication builds up in your system and the pain goes pretty quickly. Also none of those annoying sleepless nights. Pretty sure you can get it over the counter at most chemists.

thanks what u got there
I actually had free samples and was taking it 3 to4 times a day .
My knee is a bit funny the inside section of the knee has the arthritis.I was also getting pain on the left or outside section of the knee .at the time i was taking these pills .they didnt help .
BUT and I canot recall what the problem was called .But with the help of my GP.i was able to have a scan on my knee after three no's from the specialist .i said i'll tell my GP u wont give me a scan.they relented scanned my knee told me it was just arthritis on the inside of my knee.I said yes I will give you that but whats the problem on the other side of the knee .and you know what he said.
Oh that's muscular a muscle that runs the length of the leg and mine was over tight .He was not going to tell me that and was sending me out the door .when he said we better send u for pyshio (spelling sorry).months of pain latter from a young female Physio the only thing that finally stopped the pain was wading in west lakes.
Of course it didn't take the arthritis pain away. And that electrical equipment the pyhsio's use they couldn't turn it on with me .Put me through the roof when they did !!
what i have learnt .
1 specialists want me to have an office job and then exercise for hours on end.at my age its to late .
2 Specialists dont want me on my feet walking non stop lifting bending stretching carrying etc. They would prefer me to sit for 8 hours and then exercise .
3 I forget I have a bad left knee turn on it and then I cant walk.Or my leg locks up and I cant bend it ,been told no it doesnt by a specialist.mmmyes it does
4 One job I may do at work is non stop walking lifting boxes but I am supposed to walk fast doing it .Do it on a Monday sunday the following week I am still in pain.
5 Herbal remedies and anti inflammatory drugs have the same result bad diarrhoea.fish oil capsules did work but in the end they repeated badly on me
6 Lose weight does this help .i had a specialist almost yelling at me to lose weight I was and still am overweight.when I answered how much more do u want me to lose and what is my correct weight .I had just been weighed and lost 20 kilos .
i can not tell u how much to lose and what u should weigh .and u couldnt have lost oh well ok .
7 when they told me to stay off my feet i pleaded to go on a pension .NO WAY WE would give u a new knee before we did that.and you can't have a new knee your to young and you would have to stop working.
8 All this happened because I tried to lose weight (way before the 20 kilos).i would come home and then walk for 1 1/2 to 2 hours .And weekends I would put headphones on and walk and walk listen to an entire afl pregame afl game and the calls afterward.
I think i walked for 4 hours one Saturday and that was it bad knee pain that wouldn't Stop. And the first thing they found in my knee was a small ulcer and then it as Arthritis .
So what have i learnt getting old is no fun.Exercise to get fit and healthy cause more people to injure themselves is it worth effort .
And finally for those that laugh at the oldies and remember I am only 46.Arthritis is like a BAD infected toothache once the pain comes it wont stop.
And as said above its the 2am 3am early morning calls that really hurt.
Plus once the knee pain stops the back pain starts ;)
you know the worse thing skinny women who tell me to walk faster to do the job quicker push yourself gee give me a break !!!

Rant over
ps
Who ever invented stairs in footy grandstands should be shot ;)

my poor brother is a gout sufferer and has been for at least 20 years (he's now 35)... he not only gets gout in his toe which just about cripples him, he is now getting it in his thorasic (sp) joint in his back... he has a pretty strict diet but was still getting attacks after big nights out, being run down etc however now he takes preventative medication on a daily basis alaphryphynol - sometimes sold as pro-gout... he finds this keeps the attacks to a minimum and give him much relief... apparently, like all drugs there can be side effects but he tells me he doesn't suffer at all but some people can be prone to rashes.. he also says its important to keep a constant check on bloods as extended episodes of gout can cause major damage to some vital organs.

Has anyone got any diet recommendations ?

Sour Cherry Juice [ on advice from a leading Adelaide Naturopath ] which I started today
Nettle Tea
Water
Celery Juice

Now off all meat Protien [including chicken and fish which Ive been having during the attacks]]

The left foot is completely swollen now and cant put a shoe on

I only have myself to blame after over indulging in food and alcohol during December
I ask for no sympathy at home and just need to see it through.
